Generally a boost leak can go undetected under normal driving circumstances, its vacuum leaks that's cause weird afrs. I would check with a boost leak test first since they're pretty easy, then move on to other options if no leak is present.
I kinda agree to an extent. At 500hp, you would be a fool not to key the crank in these cars IMO. Plus I just really hate the idea of friction washers. I think they're a terrible design on a high performance engine, that sees high boost.

Update! Called my local machine shop who just so happen to specialize in Ford motors and they said they have no problem keying my crank or pinning the cams.
