Technically my sons, if he restarts paying.. 08 85k speed 3 owned since new, dealer never serviced or needed. Redline only oil changes since break in. Valves at manufacturer max side of clearance, not over. Was a shock to take off tmic shroud, never seen underneath. Not used to seeing no abused...

Is it normal to burn oil on a freshly built motor?

I see you have a few open questions on valve timing, and no build data. We will need more information on build, mileage, oil use, compression (I prefer leakdown) and modifications. More information will allow others to give better feedback on your posts question.

Negative LTFT at Idle, Rich AFR at WOT

A Intake valve was open, then rings are letting pressure into block. You would have to remove valve cover and turn intake cam to visualize all are closed. Honestly i think you may have only a very small spot in which all 4 cylinders intake valves are closed.

    Sad timing noises :(

If decide to stay on stock exhaust cam Mazda has stopped selling it. A Ford one will work and is available from different sources. Look at Edge catalog to get Ford part number. Also Ford cam buckets are much cheaper and have more sizes than Mazda, Corksport has a great write up on bucket...

How To: Mazdaspeed 3/Mazdaspeed 6/CX-7 VVT The Roku Way

No... I don't have the dimensions. Look at threads to get more info. Mazdaspeed and Ford motors of same family use same size. The bolt will bottom out into block and the projecting end will touch crank counterweight to give you the proper crankshaft position for timing.

    Oil pump question

No, pump sprocket had a D shaped socket that goes towards pump side, pump shaft is D shaped to fit. That's to keep pump shaft turning if bolt were to fail. With chain tensioner, guides you would likely get a few seconds of terrible noise to hopefully shut down. Crank gear for pump / chain is...

    Oil pump question

I tried my piece of shit one and 2 out of 4 yes the other two times since I was replacing chain I wedged hard wood dowel between chain and sprocket. I have a new build in progress and will make a spanner just for it. The spanner to sprocket holes with block cause a misalignment with typical...

    Oil pump question

When you replace the timing components, all the crush washers must be replaced. So you will have to remove oil pump chain which in the 4 times I've done it is PIA, and chain needs to come out to get to washer. The oil pump bolt is a use once and replace according to manual. And you will have to...

Cobb AP New “green” tuning requirements

Yes, and sadly the future. Lived in California for most of my life in the SF Bay Area and having a 1985 Toyota with Headers and modified Air Intake and fuel map change passing smog was problematic. I kept all the stock stuff and reinstalled every other year....Until the Age of vehicle made it a...

Low compression on built motor tore up the cylinder walls

Seeing the lathe machining still on piston lands just below oil control ring @ pin ends of piston. Yep looks new. So I'm only guessing now....on tuner doing tune..a generally known person on here? Could a ton of knock cause this? The top of bore area where compression rings move into tdc that...

Low compression on built motor tore up the cylinder walls

This was a 88mm rebore, new pistons / rings / rods. Manley Pistons clearance is 0.003 mine measured at 0.0031. Ran 400 miles. Was a screw up by me with oil control rings. So pulled apart and deglazed and all new rings. Correctly sized oil control rings this time and returned normal. Compared to...
