Did you check the fuel pump resistor? I've heard of people bypassing it, but if it's unplugged or just bad, your car will start and almost immediately die.
Is the fuel pump resistor plugged in? I forgot to connect mine after one of my engine replacements and it would start and almost immediately die. I still don't know why, but once I connected it, it ran fine.
That was my thinking as well, especially considering the mileage. Need to check compression.
I've never noticed it smoking after idling awhile; I've probably idled 15 to 20 minutes several times. Even over 30 minutes before and no noticeable smoke.
Stock intake? Since you're not tuned, it wouldn't matter; trims should be close to 0. Between +/-10. If you have an aftermarket intake, you need a tune.
For a good log, I guess find a straight, flat road and use 3rd gear, floor it at 3k RPM and pull to redline. Don't floor it under 3k EVER. When I used to log, I used the Hwy 64 bridge across Lake Dardanelle between Russellville and London. No way for cars to pull out in front of me, and good...
