    VTCS delete Idle

I am sure this has been asked before, but I am looking to take a bit of a survey. When the Variable Tumble Control System is deleted, some people state that their cold idle is worse, some people say that they didn't see a difference. This means that some people are numb to idle comfort or...

    Loose main bearing clearence

Plastigauge is less accurate but is more guaranteed if you don't use the tools correctly. I ran into the same trouble as you, unfortunately there is nothing I could do about it as there were no bearings available to compensate for that and this engine showed no signs of damage in the bottom...

Please remove post - too much negative feedback.

    Low RPM hesitation/stutter on acceleration

Based on what I am reading, you tried every combination of parts except the original HPFP internals. I know its a pain, but I would put the old HPFP internals back in to be 100% certain its not a parts problem.

    OCC lines collapsing

Haha. I remember doing an oil change on my Protege5 and couldn't figure out why my car smelled like burning oil for the whole trip to work and back. At first I thought I spilled oil on the exhaust manifold, but turns out I was just rust proofing my entire engine bay without the oil cap! :)

    Common vacuum leak points?

Reminds me of how good I am at doing steering racks on the 3s haha. Take a picture of the gasket surfaces before you put it back together, it should be very clean and free of debris/imperfections. Do you still have your VTCS?

    Common vacuum leak points?

Don't guess by the looks, there is a reason the manufacturer tells you to replace the gasket every time it is removed. You may get lucky and not have issues, but its not worth it. Also I have heard mixed reviews on the TIG. I would remove it and install a fresh gasket with proper install...

    OCC lines collapsing

Missed this message, sorry. Thanks for chiming in, The shop where I work on the car is 30 mins from my house. I am spoiled with a hoist and wasn't sure if I should risk driving it back to the shop with the hoses. I ended up carefully driving it to the shop anyways, shutting car down when I car...

Thanks for the replies guys! Crisis averted. I found someone local that would sell me braided line that fit. Everything else I would have to buy in bulk of 25'+

    Common vacuum leak points?

Re-tightening the intake may not be the solution, gasket replacement may be necessary. checking its fastened down well shouldn't hurt though. Don't get too hung up on this, a vacuum leak can come from many places. My cheap source for acetylene is the shop torch where I work part time.

    OCC lines collapsing

Straight to the point with a solution. Thanks Johnny! Now I know the push on style listings. Unfortunately majority won't ship to Canada. Those that do charge ~$20 just to ship a foot. :\ Rockauto has PCV hose for around $1/foot but shipping for the 25' reel is close to $80! I will keep...

    OCC lines collapsing

Finally installed my mishimoto OCC with custom bracket and cheapo coolant hoses and am seeing some hoses collapse during idle. Logically speaking, it makes sense, but wanted to confirm with someone experienced with OCCs. PERM PCV plate -> PCV Valve (orange half) -> (Green half of PCV valve) to...

    Common vacuum leak points?

Vacuum leaks are a pain, and I am pretty sure I have been putting up with one since I rebuilt my engine. How did you diagnose your vacuum leak? I know you did a head gasket: when reinstalling the intake manifold, it is critical to clean the surfaces thoroughly and carefully. In addition it is...

Very strange indeed. What did you remove in the process of installing the pump?

P2138, won’t rev above 3000 rpms, lots of smoke

    1. Compression test - this will define what you do next. 2. Use a logger such as an accessport or diag tool to watch your fuel system pressure. There are a lot of weak points here. I am not going to get into the details, but do some reading on the pressure relief valve and how to test fuel...

P2138, won’t rev above 3000 rpms, lots of smoke

I take it you didn't diagnose where the compression loss is coming from before you pulled apart the engine? Do a compression test before you get more work done. From what I have seen, Valves, rings and pistons are more common than head gaskets for compression loss on these engines. The bad...

P2138, won’t rev above 3000 rpms, lots of smoke

Perseverance is key. Glad you got it figured out. Now get a replacement connector before this problem occurs again. Replace your spark plugs. Backfires are likely due to the amount of fuel you were dumping in the exhaust when cranking. Was the #4 missfire there before this ordeal?

P2138, won’t rev above 3000 rpms, lots of smoke

    2. That sounds the same as mine. 3. I am assuming you are 100% certain you are checking pin 2A, reading a specific side of the connector can be confusing at times, depends on how clear the manual is. In any case, based on the information you have provided, the problem is in the wiring at the...

P2138, won’t rev above 3000 rpms, lots of smoke

I don't recommend cleaning plugs because your efforts are more likely to damage the plug and can give you false diagnosis. Even fouled plugs should spark, may just be weak or in the wrong location. Since you are disposing the plugs eventually, you can clean them, just don't forget to replace...
