Just had this problem over the summer, ended up being the rings and very polished cylinder walls. Did a total teardown and overbore to 88mm. All in for the rebuild will be a few grand. Ordered all the parts and I did it all myself, genuinely not TOO bad of a project and super educational.

This is a link to my car running. Recently did a full rebuild, and the only real addon performance stuff I did was a new turbo inlet pipe. It has a full Cobb intake, no tune w stock ECM. Did a balance shaft delete and a new rear motor mount and holy god this idles like an actual race car...

@Enki did that VCTS fix and replaced the purge valve and the car is running amazing right now. Really happy with it, now I am just curious about the sound/volume of air being sucked through the intercooler by the turbo. I did a pretty good vacuum leak check this morning, sprayed brake cleaner...

@Cfoldone that was my thought as well, but these are the only free bolts there are, as in, the mid-pipe has studs welded in that go through two holes in the rest of the exhaust.

Right, in your second picture where those spring bolts are... I tried having mine situated the same way, but when I went to tighten it all down and "bottomed out the bolt" (the shoulder of the bolt hitting the down pipe), the springs remained uncompressed and there was way too much play in...
