CAR SHUT DOWN WHILE STARTING?

Have had troubles getting this thing started when I bought it but it would start after many cranks, But today when I was installing some new parts. I hooked it up to the jumper. Cables like I usually do and it started giving me a little bit troubles this time, I was cranking it over and then while I still had the key in the opposition. It would shut off and then turn back on and continue trying to start itself. Well, I figured the battery was still dead so I left for 45 minutes to let it charge. Then went out, started cranking it over it. Cranked over 4 times, sounded like it was gonna start. And then everything went black. You turn the key and the oil light slightly fickers and nothing turns on. What would've happened? All I installed was a coolant resevoir.
 
** UPDATE Battery is junk, replaced that car started up still hesitantly but w/o jumpers so it was running then came p0091 where would you guys start? Started running real rough after the cel came on. But never had this issue till now.
