I looked around here and the Googles but can't figure this one out. What is this thing on the back of the driver side headlight assembly?20201015_200754.jpg

What year / trim? Gen 2 tech pack? Probably the motor for the turning headlights although I can't say I've noticed it on mine

On my 07 gt touring has HID. Head light low beam auto leveler. Connects to a module with level sensor. Also a manual adjustment knob on lower dash panel above obdll port. The off white gear and adjuster will move the beam position too.
On my 08 with standard bulbs the whole motor like assembly doesn't exist. The body wire loom had connectors for the option.

Mine's a Gen 1. I figured it would be something like that. There was nothing connected to it before I pulled it out. That said I've had a couple different guys do some work before so maybe they removed something and didn't reconnect. I'll have to poke around.

Thanks for pointing the way. At least the new assembly looks good. I shoulda done this about 5 years ago.

After reading @Cfoldone comment I took another look definitely a manual adjustment screw on the back side there you can see it. Probably vertical angle of the beam similar thing was in my old 97 e39 don't know why I didn't think of it sooner.

08 plain halogen bulbs. Motor leveler assy, no wiring, I remember the body pigtail left side around fender area, under fuse box??

07 HID, Dash leveler adjustment knob, electronic module not sure if was part of body module, abs, stability? So I Goggled...couldn't find much on adjustment. So this is what I found (ymmf) leveler is fixed to body attitude, electronics will auto "center" to level...the white plastic socket that turns sprocket is a physical movement of beam. This is not part of the electronic level, but a adjustment of what ever Electronics consider level spot for beam. So a fine tune for lack of better term. The worries I had was would I break motor if travel of movement would break internally. So since cut off is fed bs low, set dash adjustment to mid and beam (adj socket to sprocket) to my preference. Then adj knob if desired for...the home depot run of supplies :) can adjust lower or one higher for speed..g
Now be careful on that adjuster, seems really weak like Mazda thought on production line done once, never again. Seemed like I could break if went to physical limitations of range.

Now it's all making more sense. So you have to run a pigtail to the ODBii for the leveler to do it's thing. What I was wondering was if the auto leveler needed to be moved from the old assembly to the new one.

I'll just go with the manual adjustments. After the first couple of replies I found some info. I don't see anything on headlight aiming on here so if saves anybody a hour of hunting this is one of the links I found on headlight aiming:

I have my auto leveler hooked up but honestly cant see it work at all. I put the car right up to the garage and watched the beam but it didnt raise or lower.

Is it supposed to be noticeable or does it even really do anything?

Excellent link... I think that's what I used for info.
Not what meant, that obd connection is for logging on laptop with VersaTune.
Nothing to do with ability to modify.
