engine wont idle

as some of you know I have been working on a swap for my mx5.

I still havent got it running where I want it to, I have had a CEL for my egr, my new alternator with less than 200 miles on it had an issue and I was able to make a decent home made smoke tester and have found some intake and exhaust leaks :crybaby2: (the LTFT was constantly running high so had an indication there might of been an issue here)

because the engine is rotated 90 degrees everything is just so much harder to get to...
However, I have replaced the egr, replaced the alternator, took the intake apart and instead of using cheap worm hose clips have gone for some bulky t-bolt clips for the intake, also found an adapter I was using for the BOV was leaking around the gasket, this was due to the location of the grub screws to attach it to the intake pipe and the BOV gasket interfeared with each other so I had to make a custom gasket. For the exhaust leak, it looks to be possibly bolts came a little lose and have tightened them up (will be re-testing the exhaust leak again, the battery for the smoke machine had died)

I have come to start it again today (in the lovely uk rainy weather) to have it not idle, it turns over as expected and then just dies, I took the vacuum line off the BOV and sprayed brake cleaner down it, this let it run for a couple of more seconds, on ocassion after spraying break cleaner while it was trying to run too it would continue to run extremely rough after stopping to spray it (as in im suprissed it continued to turn over it was soo rough). when this happened I pinched the vacuum line to see if it would then idle and still died or didnt get any better.

due to everything being hard to get to and even see I have checked everything I can thats easy to see but coming to you guys again to get suggestions, I have felt behind the intake manifold and the vaccum line behind there is still attached, checked the brake boost line and this looks fine, from the limited view the vacuum lines ontop of the engine look ok, the only thing I can think of that is left is the evap system.

I have a vacuum tester but not to hand, I also was running forscan to try and get some data, I saved this so I could review later out of the rain and the save was corrupt so I dont have that either at this point.

is there any other vacuum lines that I am forgetting?

Is there anything else that could be causing this, bearing in mind that it was running before I fixed the above? (so I am assuming that fuel/ignition are fine and to a degree the intake too as I havent changed that and the latest smoke test pressurised the system to about 7psi and no leaks)

is there any sensor that I could of disconnected and forgot to reconnect? there was no CEL and the map/maf sensors are still plugged in

I am assuming at this point because everything was so hard to get to that I might of caught something and pulled a hose of as I have not touched anyhting else.

I have a chance to check stuff again tomorow, otherwise its going to be another week before I can get back to it...

If it dies immediately, I'm imagining that it's going to be a MAF issue, assuming that everything else is done correctly (i.e. no large vacuum leaks). If you start the car and immediately give it gas (blip the throttle just a little bit) then let it go, will it idle on its own? If so, it's definitely a MAF issue.

Well... I was sceptical about it being the maf... I thought I hadn't done anything to it, turns out I learnt something new, they are directional... I had turned the pipe around to get a better fit, little did I know this was going to be an issue, just turned back around and it's starting again! Shame I just went to Santa pod raceway for the weekend, would of loved to of taken her with me.

Thanks for the pointer there @dinnerplate
