How fast is stock MS6?

As I’ve been working on my Speed6 I’m sort of wondering what to expect as far as speed once it’s working properly.

I have a 2006 Audi A3 2.0T and I’d say that’s probably faster than my Speed6 has been at its best so far. The A3 has 200hp and 207lb-ft and is about 300lbs lighter, but that reduced weight doesn’t seem to explain that it’s faster.

So, I’m basically hoping to find out the expected performance so I know I’m ‘there’. I’ll be replacing the PCV valve later this week along with a stock turbo (and I need to diagnose an injector issue). I’m hoping these things will bring it close to original performance, but I don’t know what the original performance is.

Are you referring to 1/4 mile times ?

I should have specified. Maybe 0-60? I’m just looking for an idea. I don’t know if this is an official time, but zeroto60times.com has 6.4s for my A3. The same website has 5.7s for the 2006 Speed6, but then another site says 6.3s, and another 6.2s.

If the slower times are correct then I’m unsure why the A3 and Speed6 would only be 0.1s apart, given a 70hp and 100lb-ft power difference (and AWD in the Speed6...the A3 loses traction a bit with its FWD).

Thanks Sho. How much gain would you say could be had with no modifications except a custom tune? Does anyone here use Versatune?

Sharksinspace, enki, and johnnytightlips all use Versatune. Cobb is a little more convenient, especially if not doing a self tune.

You can't turn up the boost much without adding hpfp internals. After that you could probably see a 20 whp gain. Best bang for buck is intake, 2nd cat delete or full downpipe with high flow cat (or catless dp if ya bad), and e30. That would be like 90 whp through the entire rev range. Night and day difference, damond motorsports ran 11's with that set up.

5.7 is accurate with 94oct and decent tires at 40-42psi with the dsc off. Mine came with CAI so I could be biased on 5.7 and perhaps should say semi accurate.

Dont forget to adjust your clutch pedal. If it was anything like mine, it was hack-knee'd at best.

A good mazdaspeed 6 should destroy the times of that audi. About 1 second less in the quarter mile.

I have had 3 mildly tuned mazdaspeed 6s and i can say with authority they are pretty slow stock for the average driver. There is a combination of reasons, but i think the biggest issue is heatsoak and lack of top end zing. All of my speeds with an intake and a self tune topped out around 250whp on virtual dyno, however at the track .. sitting in the heat, waiting for your turn. id end up running 14.5@98 with a bad launch.

If you were to master the launch control (and i dont plan to because its my daily) You would easily be in the 13s stock. The audi/VW tend to under rate their cars. its rated 207hp but doesnt it put 200+ to the wheels? Where as a mazda is rated at 270 and puts 215 to the wheels. Then factor the weight....

I ran my current speed 6 with cobb intake, inlet pipe, TMIC, muffler delete with stock HPFP on E25 and 14 degrees of timing advance at redline. Only once did i see my fuel pressure drop to 1350 during a wot 3rd gear pull but it maintained my target AFR. My BNR S4 setup ran a 13.6@102 with 200 degree bats. However on the street i dont have any trouble walking 425hp SRT8's when my BATS are 140F

HOLY BATS BATMAN! lmao... sounds as bad as mine. I did some heat wrap on my exhaust manifold and gold tape on the FMIC piping over the engine. Next step is to create some block offs to help funnel more air through FMIC/Radiator.

Thanks buttons! Interesting details. Why does the Speed6 lose so much power at the wheels?

My Speed6 (which presumably just threw a rod and broke the block...) had no compression in one cylinder, and cylinders 1-3 were around 150. So I am assuming it wasn’t as fast as it should be. Honestly I’m always surprised driving the Audi how quick it is. My Speed6 was somewhat close to it (I never raced them...) but the Audi is noticeably faster.

Wasn’t Mazda in part aiming the Speed6 as a response to Audi? I’ll have to wait until I’m able to get a properly working motor before I know what the Speed6 is ‘supposed’ to be like. Is heat soak a big issue for the Speed6?

The 2006 A3, while having the nice 2.0FSI turbo engine, was Audi’s budget car at well under 30k (and I got it used for really cheap). So it is comparable in price to the Speed6. I’m guessing the Speed6 is actually faster than the A3 when it’s working properly, but looking at specs (74 more horsepower and 100 more torque) I would have expected it to be more than just a little bit faster.

audi has historically under reported the power figures of their performance models.

with an intake and muffler delete I had my MS6 at 252hp on virtual dyno. I was running E30 with 16 degrees of timing advance at 6,000rpm. 11.7 afr, 19psi on a china billet k04

3" downpipe, hpfp, 3" intake, BNR S4 now im at 410hp 23psi

Just so I can understand better, why would your MS6 be below the ‘rated’ 274hp even though you had the modifications you did?

Interesting that just those 3 mods (exhaust, intake, and turbo) gave a 158hp gain! Did you do anything else to support more hp or is that with an otherwise stock motor?

274 is crank horsepower, virtualdyno probably measures wheel horsepower, which is usually in the 220s on a stock Speed 6.
