Lets talk about turbo blankets/heat wrap

Im pulling my turbo and DP to swap them with a Tial hotside and a CPE downpipe (got that exclusive shit)

When I was getting them all ready here I wondered about buying a turbo blanket and what the benefit would be. From my bit of research there doesn't seem to be a downside. Wonder if anyone knows anything I dont about the con of them. Also trying to decide if a cheap $30 amazon one is that much worse than a $200+ DEI one.

Also thinking about wrapping the upper section of the DP just to help keep engine bay temps down. Exhaust manifold is already ceramic coated.

I know wrapping can be bad, but I dont plan to wrap over the flex sections so I think it should be fine.
 
One of the downsides I've heard with wrapping is it holds in condensation and will rust your pipes faster. I want to wrap my downpipe and part of my catback to try and cut down on my crazy drone.

I think that's only if you don't get it warm enough to evaporate all the trapped water. And the cpe DP is stainless at least

Hm. I may give it a shot then. Have any luck with certain brands? As far as turbo blankets go there isn't much of a downside. They keep the heat inside the turbo without any problems really. It's hard to find blankets that fit ko4s and BNR series turbos.
 
I have a cheap CXracing T3 blanket over my Holset, and it work just fine (prevent stuff around the turbo from burning or melting)

Only downside to the cheap blanket is that they will degrade over time (this doesnt matters if you leave it on the turbo, but if you take it off a couple time some of the inner insulation will fall off)

For my custom top mount manifold, I used DEI titanium wrapping the first time...when I did my engine rebuilt I took the manifold off, and noticed some crack were there was a lack of insulation (the shape of my manifold makes it a PITA to wrap properly)

After welding the crack in the manifold, I went berzerk and covered the manifold with the DEI wrapping and a high-temp ceramic adhesive (Cotronic...)...the final product looks like a plaster cast, but its strong as hell and every part of the manifold is perfectly covered

Where did you buy the ceramic? I'm looking to coat my manifold when I get that back from the shop.

I used Resbond 907 ceramic adhesive : http://www.cotronics.com/catalog/30 7030 907.pdf

When heat cured at 350-450F (I used the BBQ), this adhesive/putty bonded extremely well to my manifold and made a rock solid heat shield (I applied the adhesive/putty and immediately wrapped the DEI wrap over it, the dabbed another small coat of the adhesive/putty over the wrapping)

The adhesive/putty is made by Cotronics, but it can be bought from McMaster-Carr (Cotronics have minimum buy) : https://www.mcmaster.com/#7482a21/=15n5r9q

Ended up biting the bullet and just doing this before I installed everything. Seemed much easier than trying to pull it all and do it all later. going to be hard to measure under-hood temps A to B as I would like, but I have to imagine it will help. Especially at the summer track day.

I was surprised how well it worked when I did mine, I have the manny wrapped too
 
Damnit. Guess I'll have to live with drone haha
A J-pipe helped a lot for my cruising drone...I have a calculator sheet if you want to measure the J-pipe needed on your setup
