Looking for design ideas

Ive got an itch to make a new knob. Something different, and Im willing to make custom tooling for it like I did so I can make the sphere and type R.

Curious to see what kind of designs people would like. As of right now it has to be something I can turn on my lathe, so no shift patterns still, and nothing non-round in shape. If you have any ideas, let me know.

And I will mock them up. If people like any design in-particular (and I deem it feasible for reasonable cost) I will make it.
 
what about a metal oem replacement. same shape and size only in aluminum maybe a bit heavier

Hmm, thats an interesting thought. Would be hard to do because not actually round too. Not sure how much of a market there would be for a stock weight, stock shape knob.
 
Nismo shift knob lol. I had one in my speed a loved it. Its very similar to the cobb shift knob but it has a round bottom ring, which I liked.

What about something similar to the old perm shift knob? I have one, and I would be willing to send it to you as long as I get it back.

I've always like the Hurts handgrip shifters. Think it'd be possible to make something similar but round?

Make a knob that is all fins. If I can remember I'll model a concept next week.

Ditto. I would really like one for summer so I can stop grabbing a 110*+ solid stainless steel sphere. Stainless would be sweet but aluminum is good too just lighter. I'd be willing to provide some billet if it would help push you over the edge.

No need for silly shift pattern lasered or machined either.

No post on the bottom though, clean like all your other knobs.

These are pretty cool looking. a crap ton of work, but cool. I think I might be able to pull off a limited run of them. I can look into aluminum or steel and calculate the weight to see what people like if this is the design a few would like me to go with.

I bet the hard part will be keeping the dam thing centered. Regardless, the direction is...yes.

I'm actually heading over to the place I get metals from for for some other stuff, I'll post a teaser of all the aluminum and see what SS they have.
 
Yeah that's remarkably similar to what I was going to draw, though I was just going to taper it down (like the Cobb knob) rather than have the flange at the bottom (at least the one that's shown on the black one). Personally I'd want it in aluminum as I bet it would come out similar to the weight of the stock one / the leather CS one, and I'd want to anodize it to a matching dark grey. Not that I'm committing to buy one but I'd consider it. I'm just way too stuck on my current setup, not sure if I want to mess with a good thing.

Agreed that we don't need no steenkin' shift pattern.
 
Make something with an Evil M.
The problem is he needs axial symmetry so he can lathe turn it. It would have to be an evil M spun around its center, and then solidized through the middle. You could always leave a bit of a pocket in the bottom between the bottom end of the M and the center post though. Either way I'm not so sure it would be at all obvious what it was supposed to be.

I could pretty easily design a set of evil M's that could be laser or waterjet cut, heavily deburred then stacked up on each other to form something like the finned knob above. Something like that could come out pretty awesome.
