Was looking for the source of a clunking/popping sounds I have going over bumps, I get the front of my car in the air and check the wheels for play, there is a bit of play when I grab a tire and shake from the sides. However, my tie rods and ball joints all look fine as far as I can tell, and the other front wheel moves as I shake. The steering wheel also moves when I shake one of the wheels. basically, I can turn the steering wheel by turning the front wheels by hand. I'm confused because I thought that I should not be able to make the tires move at all with the car off, but it seems like I can make the whole steering system move a bit, but no individual part seems to have any play.
Loose steering rack?
