Mazda OE cam bolts

Been thinking about posting about this and now that I sit waiting on this hurricane to run over the top of me I have nothing but time.

So last month I had to replace all 16 valves and of course new washers and crank bolt, I went ahead and picked up 2 new OE Mazda cam bolts as well.

So apparently Mazda has cheaped out and went with a lower grade bolt, see pictures.

Well torque spec is 57 per shop manual and the first new in the bag OE bolt failed at 50-55 pounds. My snapon torque wrench is 1/2 pound off (reading low) in the 40-60 foot pound range.

Just a heads up. Corkspors is calling for 75 foot pounds for the cam bolts in their cam install instructions. There is no way in hell if you wind up with this new style bolt that it will make it to 75 foot pounds. IMG_20170831_104720.jpg IMG_20170831_113723.jpg

No idea what that bolt is, but it's not the part number I see on Mazdaspeed Motorsports for cam bolts.

You circled a cam cap bolt. He is referring to the cam sprocket bolt. L568-12-428 is for the bolt above. I had no issue with it maby you got a bad bolt. I mean they can't just make a oem part that can't be torqued to oem specs and be like oh well deal with it. +1 for arp. I wonder why corksport needs more torque? Its still the same sprocket, bolt and friction washer?

Its still the same sprocket, bolt and friction washer?

Idk man but both were different then what was in the motor to start with and both came from @edgeautosport.

I could feel it yield before it even got to 57 foot pounds, bout shit my pants, I thought it was the threads in the cam.

As far as the @corksport cams I believe they are the same material as OE but regardless if you get bolts like this they won't make it to 75lb, you can feel the weight difference and the stamp on the head is different, it's definitely a different grade bolt, I'm going to take the other one I have and see where it fails at.

Right...I probably should have figured that out from the torque spec...

Still not what I have listed. Not sure why there's two part numbers. The L321 is probably the correct one. The L3 parts usually refer to our engines (L3-VDT) and the LF parts are usually for the regular 2.0/2.3/2.5 duratec (LF,L5).

edit: so yeah in thinking about this more I think it's likely OP received a bolt for a Duratec 2.5.

That might be what happened, I'll look and see what the torque spec is for the 2.5, I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same or pretty close to ares.

I might have just got a bad one, not the first time I've seen bad bar stock. I'm going to get a Rockwell on the bolt and cut it open to see if there's a bubble or bad spot
