removing the differential pinion gear nut?

im trying to rebuild my differential that ran low in oil and started to make a wining noise. Im trying to figure out a way to remove the 46mm nut without using the Mazda oem tool to hold the shaft splines. Do any of you have ideas or did it by another mean ?
i thought about putting back the gears and put a towel to jam the pignon against the larger gear. what do you think?
Or is there another thing that could fit the shaft spline and can be used to make a tool?

My last option would be to just replace the side bearings and put it back toghether but being at it, if the side bearing get worn, the pignon shaft ones are probably in the same shape...
 
The axle nut? Put the spare tire on nice and tight, put the car back on the ground, and use the weight of the car + gearing to break that loose.

I opened my speed6 rear differential to replace the 4x inner bearing. i can remove the 2 side ones but the 2 others on the pignon gear shaft are retained by a 46mm nut and the shop manual says to use Mazda tool (49 L027 006) and (49 L027 007) to service it.
I can get or arrange a 46mm wrench for the nut but the other tool to hold the shaft is a socket with the multisplines patern inside and doesn't seam easy to get. the only one i found was like 400$ for a one time use....
I looking at other options?
I did try
-the front hub is not same spline size
Wheel hub are way larger
clutch disk have a smaller spline size

My last option seem to be to get it to a specialized service shop but i usually prefer to do all the things by myself...

Thread moved to ms6 trans section may help relieve some confusion....

Looks like you need the specific tool, either gotta pick them up / make it yourself or take it to a transmission shop ask them to just remove the nut for you and continue going yourself after.
 
sure i will,
long story short, the ms3 burned after the occ froze at -30 celcius and the oil spreaded on the turbo manifold. I replaced the car by a 2007 speed6...
 
SST is hard to come by sometimes and usually expensive to purchase...unless you can borrow or rent them.
Have you considered replacing the rear diff unit with another one? There was a person selling a rear diff on Kijiji in PQ. Just a thought.
 
Well yes i could replace the whole thing for another used one but i could fall into one that is worst than mine too. i prefer to rebuild it.

This weekend i will make some try out. i though about using the clutch module as an adapter. I could power the clutch solenoid to lock it up and make a tool to adapt on the front hub where the drive shaft is installed. i read it suppose to work with 0-5v signal so it should be able to hold the nut torque if it can handle the engine torque...
 
What is OD of shaft? Can you count teeth? I wonder if another tool exists with same specs like these for example for Jeep I count 24 teeth on socket on right:

Obviously if not metric not likely to fit.

I am not a machinist but there are standards used so it would not be unheard of for another vehicle to have same OD shaft with same # splines. Just finding that tool could require asking people to measure ID of tools selling.

But trying to find specs for these specialty tools I come up with nothing.

But still start by listing OD of shaft, teeth and a pic. I think I have TC flange can measure but assume same as the

you mentioned that I assume is read diff flange.

I assume a 12pt socket likely damage splines unless nut not too tight but would not really even want to try but maybe I would try if one fit and maybe try by hand just to see but think need spline tool and breaker bar (or extender on end of wrench) on nut.

Where did you find tool? The one time use probably means could be damaged.

Maybe if had rear diff out could try to mold tool. Assume you are under car?

How easily does it spin by hand could you put a powerful impact on it and just let it rip to break it loose? Hopefully where it is in the driveline it spins easily so this wouldn't work

This part confuses me but think maybe ment would work?
If can find socket deep enough to clear shaft I would think this should work especially if both rear wheels are on and not allowed to spin. If case installed issue being car jacked up have to figure something out to hold rear wheels. If removed then idk install axles or try without...probably wont matter as enough mass in case to prevent from just spinning.
The clutch is part 6 that you removed so it should work. Get something like an m18 2962-20 with HO battery on it.

I’m in the same boat as you,rear end was run without oil, ordered all new bearings and seals, I got the differential taken apart on my floor, I can’t seem to get the ring gear and differential out of the housing. The Mazda service manual says to remove the pinion nut and strike the pinion with a brass hammer. I’m hoping a block of wood and striking tool will do the job. I wanted to see if you had any pictures or guidance from your project, how did it turn out, was it successful?

I have owned my Mazdaspeed 6 for approximately 4 years, took it to the Middle East, did a bunch of suspension repairs, got a replacement rear diff after I discovered it was run without oil and began whining after I installed polyurethane rear diff mounts, replacement diff is making the same noise as the original, so I’m now in Europe with the car and undertaking a rebuild project. Unfortunately for me, this car is my daily so I can’t really afford to have it down for long periods of time, so spare are a wonderful thing.

Did anyone find a solution to this thread without needing the specific Mazda tool to pull of the pinion flange in order to service a leaking pinion seal ?
 
If you still have the LSD/Ring gear in it, you can wedge it in place and spin off the pinion nut.

If you don't have the LSD/Ring gear in it, there's no good way to hold it without the SST. If you don't care about the pinion...the jam something in there lol.
