Removing transmission question

I saw this video:

Template public:_media_site_embed_youtube not found. Try rebuilding or reinstalling the s9e/MediaSites add-on.

And it doesn’t look like he drops the subframe when removing the engine with the transmission still attached. I’m assuming he also didn’t do anything with the transfer case.

How does he get enough clearance from the transfer case to get the transmission free? It seems like there’s only about 1.5 inches clearance between the transmission and body of the car. Is that enough to clear the shaft of the transfer case from the transmission?

I'm trying to remember how I did mine. I don't think I removed the subframe completely. I know I loosened most everything and held it out of the way with straps (ie- pulled towards the rear). I was able to separate and drop on my own - re-install took more than my skinny ass.

Thanks jdr767. Though I can quite easily pull the transmission up rather than down. The engine is dismantled down to the block with everything disconnected. It’s just hard for me to see how the transmission can move over far enough to get clearance from the transfer case without making additional room by dropping the subframe. But I’m pretty sure the dude in the video didn’t drop or lower it.

Maybe I misread your original post. I've not pulled with the engine connected so I can't offer anything there. I do remember even separated it was a lot of minute adjustments, using a motorcycle lift to drop the thing down. Over an touch, down a half inch etc - but now a inch back. It was a tight squeeze either way. This was also on a PU so I should probably read where these posts are made before responding next time =|

Ok ... I watched the video more closely and he takes out the transfer case along with the engine and transmission. I wonder if that’s easier.

It doesn’t look like he lowers the subframe, so then maybe a lot of the work in doing that and supporting the power steering are irrelevant.

But then I wonder how much of the removal process is affected by his engine being obviously ‘upgraded’ quite a bit.

Seems like disconnecting the transfer case to come out with the transmission might not be a big deal...

Looking at this thread there isn’t much holding it in, and since I wouldn’t be pulling it out from below perhaps I can leave it connected to the transmission and rotate them a little for clearance to get the block out, and then pull out the transmission and transfer case together.
