ENGINE/DRIVABILITY

Year/Make/Model: 2007 Mazdaspeed 6 GT
Mileage: 134,xxx (USDM replacement engine 100,xxx)
Location: Wisconsin Cheese
Concern: Rough running, hesitation/stutter/stumble
DTC's: P2188 / P0138
Modifications: Cobb SF Intake, all else new CS HPFP internals/o-ring, Fidanza flywheel
ECU/Tuning Software:
Accessport available
Tuner: N/A
Is the concern intermittent? No.
Can you duplicate the concern? Yes
Recent Repairs: Engine swap. And replaced the following with new OEM: ignitors, injectors, turbo, vvt replaced, disc, pressure plate, TO & pilot bearing, water pump, thermostat, serp belt, starter, non-oem reman alternator, cannot recall spark plugs, but most likely NGK

Correction: incoming MAF - Denso xxx6040 / NTK secondary 02 sensor, TDC Pin (10/11/2024)

Engine recently replaced by a shop and then went through troubleshooting at the Dealer and would not start. Checked TDC (w/o PIN) and re-adjusted cps based on findings. Vehicle finally started 9 months after the swap and parts install.

Allowed car to idle to operating temp. Car seemed to stumble every now and then. CEL did eventually turn after at some point while listening to the vehicle from exterior. I did choose to drive around the block since car sounded okay for the most part. Extremely mild drive up to 3rd gear where I did feel somewhat of a hesitation or stumble in drivability. Again only going around the block.

My main reason of pre-mature posting since I am going to re-check the cps location and replace MAF (oddly found AutoZone paperwork in the car with the same P2188 code) is to question two things. First, I don't recall the Cobb SF intake being there (previous owner), but after the battery reset wouldn't the Cobb SF intake cause issues for the ECU? I apologize for what is likely common knowledge. I am doing what I can by scouring posts and information and I thought I came across that. The MAF needed to be changed so I am replacing, and I have OEM airbox that I can put back for good measure.

Secondly, I purchased an Accessport when I bought the VVT and HPFP internals, so would it be beneficial to plug that in with the existing errors I am getting. Would it help me to further diagnose/test or would it be better to leave it off until all codes have been officially cleared. I don't plan to actually run with the Accessport until issues are cleared and I have a proper tune only considered for the purpose of more information.

I will likely update further information Saturday. I can also post a video of it running as I am also trying to determine if the VVT should be adjusted/reviewed by the initial shop. I feel like I am hearing something when the vehicle starts. It's hard to decipher if the other noise is VVT or if I am hearing the power steering pulley.

It's warm out and finally starting back on this. I currently only have a P2187 code remaining. Car seems to want to hesitate at times right near 5 rpm, almost like the fuel is cutting. Does anything within the logs look familiar. I was able to pull these while the code was actually off.

My first logs and not certain I completed it properly. I followed it a YT vid.

Sorry for the delay. Are the coilpacks oem? Things like sensors and such are oem only if you want them to work.

Also Google mazdaspeeds.org and P2187. Tons of posts with resolutions. Here wad mine:

The MAF is not OEM, it was purchased this year from Rockauto when the code came up just before winter. I have a used OEM coming in the mail next week. The o2 is not currently OEM, but recently replaced. Ignitors and injectors are both OEM and new. Spark plugs were newly replaced, but uncertain of brand. Turbo is also new. So parts have been off and back on the car.

I've checked for vaccuum leaks-- currently looking at smoke machines off Amazon to test for leaks but as of the moment, I cannot state whether there are any.

I tried reviewing some of my logs against yours, but I don't know what my numbers truly mean as to potential numbers that may help pinpoint where my issue may lie. From the numbers I believe I won't continue to attempt driving to log any issue as the AFR/STFT/LTFT don't look good based on the information I was reading in different posts and what I'm looking at.

The cobb intake has given people issues when installed without a tune and maf cal. Gen 2 ms3 won't run when installed without a tune

I went back in the AP and did new logs. I know it sounds odd not to have done it the first go around, but I reflashed the ECU to include the Cobb Intake. I didn't initially as I mainly installed to get any and all codes. I don't have an active MIL yet but I only had the car on idling for about 10 minutes then just about another 10 minutes of driving to get the light back on or log.

I know it will not likely be possible, but I took some sound in the event anyone hears boost leaks or anything really. I just had my phone set down under my windshield wiper so no real picture.

BTW, how are you all monitoring the different gauges on the AP-- I saw different ones under one of Raiders post. All I have on mine is Accel, but I saw others able to actively monitor STFT/LTFT, AFR and the like.

sounds rough.

I planned on requesting a tune, just trying to clear up any and all CEL/MIL before doing so. I figured that would be the smart thing to do otherwise I'd just be coming back for an adjust after all my other ratios were back to spec, please correct me if I have that all backwards.

I updated the ECU.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that all CEL/MIL and trims clear when you reflash.

They do. It mentions it while finishing the re-install. I just turned it on to idle for a bit to review for the light, now it's back after about 10 minutes of idle. I didn't check the code again yet, but I will. It took longer for it to return, so I was actually kind of hopeful.

Cleared away time this week to review further here, work on the car when the weather permitted and learn more about the AP. Figured out where I went wrong trying to add the different gauges to the AP and now have the gauges there. I wish I had this real time information before I started switching around parts and testing different things. I'm seeing what looks like better numbers, but still need work.

AFR is sticking around 14-15. I truly don't know whether that is bad until I dig through a few others logs. I also have a better understanding to what's happening near 5 rpm as the AFR jumps to the 20s. I'm assuming this is the map dumping until I get a tune. Anyone care to comment?

The fuel trims seem to be about 6% from one another as.

Second log is just a few throttle presses

The P2187 seems to be gone after replacement of the upper o2 sensor. Swapped it from the Test Speed and it seemed like AP numbers looked better and seemed to continue further without the code. Replaced and it hasn't returned. Continually driving and testing, I eventually ended up getting a P0401 to which I later cleaned up the EGR valve and pipe the following weekend.
More driving and this time figured I was good to go, but ended up getting P0455 and P0401. Coming home and needing more gas, I pulled into Costco only to realize the gas cap was actually loose. I don't think I've ever put on a gas cap half a--ed, but I know where I did it and why. Why? Does anyone still have teens or people in their town go out and race or hang out for extended periods at gas stations, car washes and such on Saturday nights? Well I guess I got distracted with the 20 or so imports/domestics and an exotic just hanging around the gas station. I mean there was a young woman in attendance just sitting in her car hanging out and helping her baby dance. Who brings a baby to Saturday night -- whatever it was.
Anyway, gas cap tightened, car full of gas and continuing this pursuit of eliminating codes and finding out more things.

I also just realized I can delete the CEL/MIL from the AP, sigh. I didn't scroll up enough in the code/DTC section to realize it was even there.

If anyone wants to reply to the post above this one about the AFR and STFT/LTFT it would be appreciated, if not I'll get there with more searching.
