Should I replace or rebuild my turbo?

Sounds like you've got a good plan mate! I'm in the same boat I'd love a BNR S3 when my k04 poops but I'd have to drain funds to do it...

EBCS Cobb or grimspeed are the two standard go toos for us, MAP sensor Bosch, pig tail JBR and rpm store both make one. Everything can be gotten from the rpmstore or edge Autosport can't remember if rpm has a mso discount anymore, but you if have a bulk order pm them on here and they may be able to help you out with a bulk discount, same goes for edge.

Whelp, as expected, the PCV Valve was not bad. My intake valves are all clean now, too.

I plan to order an S3 and it's associated parts tomorrow. I have PMs out asking if they offer MSO or veteran discount(s). I will pull my K04 tomorrow, expecting to see goop on the exhaust side. I guess I am down a car for a week or two while parts show up. Good thing the 'Rona is keeping me home from work for a while.

Awesome! Get that tune ordered as part of your parts list too, sometimes that can take about a week to get the base map sent to you. Of you haven't picked a tuna yet a cannot recommend freektune enough, Justin has been great to work with everytime I've dealt with him and car drives like a dream.

Today I am going to start cleaning my valves and get the new PCV installed.

In the meantime:
Looking around on this forum and doing some reading, this is how I understand a minimum S3 Install would cost:
S3= $1150
3 BAR MAP= $40
Pigtail for MAP= $30
3 Port EBCS= $80-$120
Turbo inlet coupler= $20
Tune= $200-250
Shipping, unexpected costs, and taxes=$100
So cost would be $1600-1750 depending on which EBCS, which tuner, etc. I don't see any special fluids, adhesives, or tools I would need that I do not already have.
My choke points would be the stock down pipe and TMIC but I am ok leaving those for now. I would assume this would net me a combo that is reliable, some (not tons) more power, and is only limited by the DP and TMIC.

It's tough because that's a huge number in our budget right now but it seems like the right way to go. Or I buy a used K04/cartridge now, and start prepping for an S3 in the near future. I may do another K04 now, then start buying the other stuff (MAP, EBCS, TMIC and DP) over time so when the second K04 pukes, I am spending $1150 instead of $1700. hmmm... I sense a tense conversation with the wife tonight.

BTW, I super appreciate everything you guys are posting! I know I am a newb and appreciate the time you guys are taking!

3 BAR MAP= $40
Pigtail for MAP= $30
Just get the CS 3.5 bar, no need for a pigtail and will be clutch if you ever want more power. It is not much more.

3 Port EBCS= $80-$120
Get an eBay MAC Valve they are the same exact thing everyone uses but JBR and Grimpseed put pretty stickers on.

12V MAC 3-Port Electronic Boost Control ECU Solenoid Valve DC35A-AAA-DDBA-1BA US
and this plug "polarity does not matter" 2 - Way Receptacle Connector Pigtail

I would also get an intake 3" hard intake if you can. This will set you up nicely to use the S3 fully and not really need to change much in the future. 3.5" if you think you will ever be going up in power.

I'm taking notes too... :icon_writing:

Looks like the MAC valve will need a brass fitting for the 3rd port, and some sort of mounting bracket, in addition to the connector and vacuum hoses.

You can VTA the EBCS on the port that goes back to the air intake or get another fitting. You can also make a bracket pretty easily to mount it somewhere. All about time vs money.

Ok, just placed my order with RPM.

I thought about the CS 3.5 BAR MAP but my thought is, if it fails, it's $90 to replace. If the 3 BAR Bosch fails, it's $40. I do not see me ever really pushing my boost to the point where I would need 3.5 BAR anyway (I say that now....;)). I also got their adapter.

I ordered the Grimmspeed EBCS because I know it will get here in time to install (it is shipping in the same box as the Turbo) and I know I can make it work. No trips to the Hardware store to buy the brass nipples I need; just open the box, make it fit. Those brass piece costs can add up. I put a Trans Cooler on my Jeep and I spent more than $30 in brass fittings to get that biatch to work. So between the gas, the time to get the fittings to work, the cost of brass pieces, it just was not worth the cost savings.

RPM gave me a veteran discount and free shipping so, so far I am well below budget. I placed my order this morning and it still shows "processing" so hopefully it will show "Shipped" on Monday. I hope to pull my K04 off tonight. I did not re-install my intake yet because I assume it will be much easier to install the MAP with the intake off (and I was out of brake cleaner so I have not cleaned it out yet). I am crossing my fingers that I will get to start it up again by next weekend.

@rang-a-stang, when I had to replace my MAP sensor (mine went faulty) I did it from the passenger side near the dipstick.

It is tight quarters in there, but I did the job with barely having to remove anything...I think I just removed the intercooler shroud and that was all. The intake does not come into play.

Good luck with your build! I'll be curious about your progress.

When in doubt check out the CS directions for installing parts even non CS ones. They have great install guides. CST4 should be very similar install to the s3 and you can look at their map sensor install too.

Thanks, @Duey1083 ! I guess I should start a build thread in the build thread area....
I agree @Awafrican ! I hope they get here soon! I am chomping at the bit to fire it up!
Good point @JohnnyTightlips. I will look them up. Getting the turbo out was not that big a deal but, HOLY CRAP some of the hardware was torqued!!! I also assume I will need to get some hi-temp locktite. I am sure that type of detail will be mentioned in the CS install instructions. I see the MAP bolted to the side of my intake so installing it on the bench would be easier than in the car. That's the only reason I am waiting. It does not buy me anything to install the intake now.

Then this:
Template public:_media_site_embed_googledrive not found. Try rebuilding or reinstalling the s9e/MediaSites add-on.

MAP should be on your intake manifold, definitely easier on the bench but quite doable with it on the car. Certainly not something I'd take the IM off to install but if it was already off that's a nice perk. MAF is on the intake

Sorry to hi-jack your thread @rang-a-stang, just curious about whether or not one should look to replace the stock BPV when installing the BNR S3 or CST4 and aiming for 300ish hP / 325 lb-ft of torque on pump gas.

I happen to have a k04 in my garage if you're interested in going that route. Only 10k-ish miles on it. Never smoked and in good shape. Not sure about shipping cost across the country...
Do you still have the turbo? Mine has finally died.

I have no idea of the quality, but I bought this to replace my OEM turbo which is spewing oil. I haven’t installed it yet and so I can’t even say my own experience, but it caught my attention because wasn’t expensive :) After receiving it I can say that it seems decent enough as far as I can tell.

Once I install it I can rebuild the OEM turbo and have it ready if this one fails.
Did ya do the swap
