Hey all, I recently acquired a 2013 mazdaspeed3 back in March. It had about 115k miles on it and I had not had any problems with it up until recently. The previous owner has done some minor modifications but had left it generally close to stock. I am not sure on any of the specifics when it comes to the mods, most don’t have any branding or were poorly DIYed by the previous owner. I am unsure if it has been tuned or if the hpfp internals have been replaced.
Mod list:
Atmospheric blow off valve
Oil catch can
Cobb intake piping (stock airbox) (picture attached below)
Muffler delete
Catalytic converter delete
Year/Make/Model: 2013 Mazdaspeed3
Mileage: 121k~
Location: Wisconsin
Concern: Codes without symptoms of problem - concerned about long term reliability
DTC's: p0172 system too rich - p0420 catalytic converter efficiency - p0101 - MAF sensor. All intermittently come on
Modifications: listed above
ECU/Tuning Software: Unsure - Maybe stock?
Tuner: Unsure
Is the concern intermittent?: Intermittently appears every few miles after clearing codes
Can you duplicate the concern?:
Recent Repairs: Serpentine belt, valve cover gasket
Correction:
Around July I started getting check engine lights every so often. It started with just the occasional catalytic converter code.
Around this same time I noticed an oil leak had started. When I had first gotten the car I had taken it into Mazda to get an oil change. They had overfilled the oil by about a quart and a half. It was fine for about a month, and I didn’t realize there was an issue and still hadn’t checked the oil yet. Then the car started acting strange upon acceleration. It started off hesitating under load, not just the usual turbo lag. Within about a week of the hesitation starting it would majorly misfire. Upon anything more than about a quarter throttle it would start to accelerate, cut off the fuel for a second, then lurch hard.
We started by checking for vacuum leaks, there were none. We found the oil catch can (until now we weren’t aware it was there), and found it filled with oil. We checked the oil in the car and it was overfilled. We drained the oil to the right level and cleaned out the oil catch can and it started running perfectly fine once again.
It seemed fine for around a month until about August when I started getting codes for the MAF sensor. I tried cleaning the sensor and that helped for a few hundred miles but wouldn’t be a permanent solution. Bought an OEM one from Mazda and assumed it would fix the problem. Kept getting MAF codes every 20~ miles but never felt any power loss or saw any fuel efficiency loss. Around the same time I started getting codes that I was running rich. Every 100~ miles it would pop up, but, same deal, no power loss, no gas mileage loss.
Throughout these past few months my father and I have done various minor repairs and have attempted to troubleshoot the issues. We started by fixing the overfill, replaced the MAF sensor, then did a valve cover gasket replacement to fix the oil leak and most recently did a serpentine belt replacement.
This brings us to today, still getting MAF codes, occasional running rich codes, and catalytic converter codes. We are at a loss for what the issue(s) could be. Any ideas for what to do? Tune? Repairs?
