Weird noise

I just got my speed3 about two weeks ago and it is making a weird tapping noise can’t tell if it’s rod knock or the timing chain at first i thought it was the timing chain but now it sounds like it might actually be rod knock the car just hit 97k miles so i was assuming the timing chain because i know around that time is when it should be replaced before i ordered parts just wanted some insight i can try to upload a video if possible edit: forgot to mention if i give it gas up to like 3k and let go it drops down in rpms and acts like it wants to stall

Before doing anything else disconnect the drive belt and run the engine to see if the noise is still present. A bad pulley or bearing can cause a knocking sound.

Also check to see if it changes with clutch input. A bad pilot bearing or throw out bearing can knock.

If it's still there after removing the belt and checking the other things then the next step is probably just to order a motor. I hate to say it but if you do the VVT chain replacement and it doesn't fix it then you're gonna have to either rebuild or replace the motor. Bright side is if you do the VVT and it doesn't fix it, you can buy a used engine and swap all the VVT stuff to it. You'll have to buy friction washers again but those are cheap.

could it possibly be the VVT if it drops in rpm’s after i give it a rev to about 3k it’ll drop to 500rpm maybe lower and the car acts like it wants to stall then jumps back up

Do you have any trouble codes? Any VVT issue or timing issue is a Type A DTC meaning it sets instantly when it occurs. Type B codes are usually set if it occurs multiple times after a few keys cycles.

I don’t have any lights except my tpms but I’ll have to check my accessport when I’m home i know i saw a couple codes the other day on there

You should post an idle log (car up to temp), and maybe one of the rpm drop to 500. Does the knocking sound speed up when you give it throttle? Is it just during start up, or while it's running?

The fuel pump is also loud, so move your head close to it, and see if it's that.

Hi there! Another MPS lover here.. does this mean that you do not -need- to replace the Timing Chain in the engine as a preventive measure? Like, I could wait for it to give it a code someday? Because it's a costly replacement..

Definitely not we know they can and do fail and the last thing you want is to jump timing and bend a valve or worse.

Some people go by it's good until there's slack or chain noise on start-up, from what I've seen over the years that's not something I would ever personally reccomended, if you've got a code the damage could be done.

Yes it's costly to do the maintenance but the cost is less than an engine

I agree....Get it done. I had bought a-- bring a trailer-- 07 speed 3. When I got it running, codes for valve timing retard. Drive for a mile auto Shutdown engine, but would start and fail.
That's when I found this treasure trove site.

My VVT was toast. Chain was loose, hitting cover, and turning over crank showed intake cam bouncing advanced or retard by just the valve springs loading unloading cam.
