Correction:

I recently bought a 07' speed3 for a decent barging for what came with the car but now it started to have a weird whirl noise and i cannot figure out if its the turbo going out or the boost piping. The noise seems to come from mid firewall/upper left, also seems to be only doing it when warmed up. Also only does it when going above 5psi of boost, as long as i stay under that the sound dosent happen and the car dosent feel down on power. The guy i bought it from left me 3 turbo (2 pretty much brand new and 1 needing a rebuild) + the one in the car. I did read that the 07 had a bad batch of turbo installed so im wondering if i need to swap mine out for a good one. The engine is old but new to this car so i dont know all the history on it but i know the VTT and the timing component were done when he swapped the engine of the car. Im slowing building it back to OEM+ and so far i have rebuilt the brake and suspension. Engine tested good on compression (had to it semi cold, wasent up to full temps but had 168psi equal on all 4cyl) I know its a junkyard engine but it run very smooth and no oil consumption.

Ill attach some vid with the hope that you can hear the sound.

Please do not hesite to contact me or to let me know what i can improve!

(hope this is the right place for this question)

Hear a lot of banging but not much else. Try to describe the sound, and let us know what you inspected.

Also, you should be able to free-rev to above 5 PSI, so doing that while parked with the hood up and a friend helping is probably a good idea.

Sound like a bit like a wheel bearing going bad but coming from the engine, kinda like a whistle with a miss fire(?). Ill try to free rev once warm to see if it does the sound and ill upload it for sure!

Thanks for the answer!

Hello again ,

Had to take it for a drive for an emergency today and managed to capture the sound that I've talking about , i am almost sure that its turbo issue now...

In the meantime since your reply I have check the oil , intake piping and the BOV which would need replacement unless turbo smart sells rebuilt kit.

Hope this helps and looking forward for you guys opinion !!

Well...

Not a great day but if anyone is reading this, if you hear something similar to the sound I was hearing, its the turbo..

Just got around to taking the intake out and now I see why it was sounding like that

I'd post the video but the site won't let me but you can clearly see the marks from where it was hitting the housing

Shaft play?
Tiny bit but im guessing its too much, if I put a bit of pressure on it the turbine wheel hit the housing

here i cut the video in half but you can hear it scrapped when i turn it by hand, if its not completly worn out yet it was on its way out but i just dont see why it happened, oil was good and engine is pretty healty just intressting mode of failure. Havent read lot but from my reshearch they dont really fail that way

How old is the oil change? If the oil has thinned due to fuel dilution or something else, that could be why. I assume it doesn't do this when cold...?

No i think i know why now that you talk about oil, I did do a fuck up where I put 2.7l of 5w30 and by accident put the rest as 0w20 , caught soon enought (within 100km) that I hope no engine damage as occupé but now im running 5w30 full synth but next one will he 5w40 t6 she'll

In hindsight im not used to turbo car and didn't think of it but now it would explain the dead turbo as wrong oil grade was use even briefly

There's an oil thread here somewhere. Best oils or somesuch.
Alright ill find it thank you,

Now im at the point of unbolting it from the manifold and 3 of the stud bolt are loose.. Wondering why now I was able to remove them by hand lol

Seems like the big turbo was removed to put on a shit "hey bro you don't want that stocker anymore right?" turbo swap prior to part out

Well then anyway to mesure and what to look for in the ''new'' turbo so im not putting in another problem in the car?
