Is there still a fight going on between denso and ngk step colder and which one is better.

Check it at a cold temp. When the motor is cold, then check it after driving for a while to see if the level changes when warm if there is a change. If there is no leak then maybe the last time they changed the fluid they did not fill it all the way.

Get a bright led flashlight and shine it through the front grill and look at the lines the the cooler.

I don't know about most people. I pull mine apart almost every other oil change and add a light coat of grease to the piston and o-rings.
