Yes, you need to take the regulator & filter out of the basket for running a return setup. Then in-tank regulator regulates the pressure to [about] 40psi and dumps the excess back into the fuel basket.
For a return setup you run ALL your fuel to the engine bay and have a regulator there to...
So after using this and a few other threads to build a return setup, a couple things to note...

Not sure if you've figured this out, but they are pump power and fuel level sender. If I'm not mistaken the brown & white wires (smaller gauge) are fuel sender and the green & black (larger gauge wires) are the fuel pump power.
I just want to say... Give me a break, I'm sure I did at least an autocross session, drove it like a stole it nearly everyday, and this is probably the longest interval I have and will ever do, not something I planned on.
