Not standard forsure! IF he is still leaking with the valves closed then i would agree with EB that the valves are not sealing properly.

I agree, finding a low mile/heathy motor for a platform that is a decade old is rare, i doubt the jdm motors for sale today are still coming across the pond with 50-60k miles.

pretty sure the valve springs would prevent that, without cams (and all springs still installed) all valves should be closed.

Well I was more so thinking about the valves hitting the piston, which would account for the low compression #'s (assuming cylinders 2-4 pistons kissed the valves) a little borescope camera could confirm if they made contact.

not sure why the rod doesn't go in and goes up but your pedal should not go limp. next time it sticks down look at your clutch pedal and make sure the rod is lined up with your clutch master cylinder, if it is then i would suspect the master is not primed with fluid or it has failed. replacement...
