Hey there!
I have a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 with about 146k miles. I'm having an issue with the car making a ticking sound. I'll be getting the car looked at soon but, I'm curious what you guys think the issue could be. Here's a video I took of it making the sound:

The car makes a noticeable ticking sound when starting the car and when the car is revved to 2-3k RPM.

Seems too loud to be the usual suspects, and the sound immediately at cold start but fading as oil pressure would come up is somewhat telling too. Hopefully it is something else entirely that is inexpensive/easy to fix.

Possibly timing chain tensioner?

Or the VVT Actuator, but I'm just spit balling. The VVT noise goes away and is only heard from cold start, your is consistent. Could always be the timing chain! But that's honestly me being hopeful. I hope you keep us informed on what it is. I hate knock knock jokes

Thanks for the responses so far haha. I'll keep you guys informed once I get it in. Hopefully I'll get lucky with it :]

Update:
I brought it to the mechanic and they think its a spun rod bearing. He also said it shouldn't be my timing chain because of how consistent the ticking sound is and how new the chain looked.

As of right now I don't think I have enough money to have someone build a motor, so I'm gonna put the car up for sale and see if anyone else is interested. I think I'm going to try to save up and find something more reliable/newer. If I don't sell the car this summer I might change my mind and get it built with the money I saved up :)

Actually, I'm gonna change my mind right now. Screw it, I'm gonna keep this car and build it. It's gonna be expensive either way, and I love this car. Now I just gotta research the best path for a built motor.

If you go Graveyard, you should get it Dramatuned immediately thereafter; that should put that motor out of its misery pretty quick.
(This is satire, don't actually use either of those people for shit on your car)

Where are you at in WI? There is a very Speed friendly shop in the Chicagoland area.
I'm located in Green Bay, so it would be a little bit of a drive. If you could tell me the shop I will definitely keep it in mind if I can't find a speed friendly shop closer to me.
