Bolt-on Gen 2 GTX Turbos now available

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that the Bolt-on Gen 2 GTX Turbos are now available for the Speed 3 and 6. We are adding them to our site now and I'll post the link when its up.

As for pricing, the Gen 2 option will be exactly $0.00 more than the Gen 1. I know that is going to be a little tough for some of you, but it is more than worth to upgrade to the Gen 2 wheel. Please let me take a moment to explain why...

Basically, you can expect the Gen 2 GTX's to operate more efficiently than the Gen 1. This means less boost to make more power and lower adiabatic heat. When you turn it up, Garrett says you can make up to 20% more power on the GTX Gen 2 than you can the GTX Gen 1.

According to Garrett, this is all accomplished with better aerodynamics. These turbos will also feature a speed sensor port so you can keep an eye on your turbos ridiculously high revs/min.

First pic is of the Gen 2 Compressor map, and it is followed by the Gen 1 compressor map. Both of these are of the 3076 variety.

This should make for an extremely efficient/fun Turbo series, especially in the smaller varieties which can now out power their old counter parts without losing any spool time in the process...

Another cool feature that some of you top mount turbo dreamers will appreciate is that the Gen 2 GTX turbos are available in a reverse configuration meaning that you don't have to do any weird bends or have any valve cover clearance issues when you try to do a top mount turbo setup with these turbos.

Tempting as an alternative to the pricey EFR kit. If only these didn't suffer from the restrictive Mazda flange design! Argh...

Yeah, these are available with the vband hotside. ATP just converts them to be bolt on with their own turbine housings.

Any ETA on when the gen 2 kits will be available for the Focus ST?

Still not sure when they will be released for the ST, but it shouldn't be too much longer I hope.

Gotcha, so when they use a V-band hotside option, I guess you need an EM with an EWG hookup?
 
Was there ever any word on whether the IWG was designed better so boost creep wasn't such a problem? I might be interested in one at some point since I'll only be able to deal with an open dump EWG for so long.

ATP revised the IWG ages ago, but there are still a few reported cases of boost creep. However it is pretty rare now I believe.
 
I really question where Garrett is getting this "20%" horsepower increase figure from. Looking at the very right-hand side of the compressor maps (which is where those of us without octane, fueling, or heat limitations live), you can see that the Gen1 GTX3076 is flowing about 65 lb/min at 65% efficiency with a pressure ratio of 3.25:1. The Gen2 can put out about 65 lb/min at 66% efficiency with a pressure ratio of 3.0:1, and can flow a little more, ~67 lb/min at 61% efficiency and ~2.6:1. Really, when you look at the whole compressor map, there is a ton of overlap between the old and the new maps. They are for all intents and purposes equivalent. Look at the upper end of the 76% island...the Gen1 and Gen2 are flowing the same amount at the same pressure ratio, only difference is the Gen2 is running at a higher RPM.

I was reading a thread on VWVortex where people were discussing that the primary advantage of the new turbos is that they spool better and have an improved surge line (you can see data supporting this claim as well). That's definitely cool and exciting. But Garrett's horsepower claims seem totally out of line with reality based on their own data.

I've been talking with Edge about the exact same thing. They showed me this:

While it doesn't "prove" anything other than Garrett's claims, Garrett is such a huge, reputable, well-known turbo manufacturer. They make many OEM turbos and are one of the biggest players in the turbo game. If they give these new numbers in the link I posted (which I'm sure are bhp, not whp), I'm inclined to believe them. Nevertheless, I'd like to see some of these on some Speeds to see what's what.

Since these new Gen IIs use 9-blade compressor wheels instead of the 10- or 11-blade old GTX'es, it makes sense they could spool faster (being lighter). Also, lower blade count is associated with a better top-end/power potential, as a general principle. That's why 6+6 blades generally make more up top and 7+7 generally have a little better middle, but less top. But these are full-length blades (Gen II) instead of the staggered types found on Precisions, EFRs, etc.
