Mileage: 130,000 (about 50k-60k on the motor)
Location: Chicago (about 600 feet above sea level)
Concern: Possible timing issue or maybe crank/cam position sensor failure
DTC's: p0016
Modifications: JBR 3.0 Tru-flow intake, CPE Turboback Exhaust, Auto tech HPFP Internals, TurboXS hybrid bov,
ECU/Tuning Software: Cobb Accesport V3
Tuner: Freektune
Is the concern intermittent? CEL turned on in October 2021 first, was reset and did not come back until April 2022, reset again and came back in early July and comes back after about 10 miles of driving after resetting again.
Can you duplicate the concern? It's constantly on
Recent Repairs: None
Notes: Car seems to run fine.

Hey man, did you ever get this fixed? I had the same symptoms with a chronic symptomless P0016 code on my gen 2 before my motor blew in March that just kept coming back after clearing it. I just swapped the motor in for a fresh longblock from SP63 and did the correct installation process on to install the crank sensor. P0016 still comes on after about 10mi of driving and has no noticable effects. Going to try to realign the crank sensor again using this procedure I found on the Mazda6club forums using a timing tool peg (SST):

"The manual says to determine when cylinder #1 is going into compression stroke before installing the SST (Special Service Tool = Top Dead Center Peg). I pulled the three spark plugs in cylinders 2-4 to eliminate compression in those cylinders so that I could feel compression occur, in cylinder #1, as I turned the crank with the wrench. As a double check, I pulled the remaining spark plug, in cylinder #1, and had a buddy cover the hole with his hand to confirm when compression was felt. At this point, I unbolted the "blind plug" and then screwed in the SST. Pretty simple and straight forward, just a little tedious to get to but you can with an end wrench and your finger tips. Once installed, I gently rotated the crank further into the compression stroke until I felt the crank stop as the peg came into contact with the "crank weight". I then simply lined up the centerline of the sensor with the 20th tooth to the left of the space in the timing cog."

Will report back what happens. Let me know if you ended up fixing it though!
