Sup y'all. So my Dad owns a 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege and has been having some issues with it for awhile. At around 4,500+ rpms if your foot is really into it, the car will violently jerk and refuse to keep pulling. It feels as if I've stomped on the brakes for a second. My father has taken it to a mechanic a few times and they are just throwing ideas at the wall at this point. I keep trying to convince him to take it to a real shop that knows turbo cars, but you know old people...Anyways I was hoping all of the knowledge folks here would have an idea of where to start or have heard of this problem before. Thanks in advance! For reference I am quite mechanically inclined and can turn a wrench. I autocross an old mustang and am pulling the engine out soon for maintenance. I just know absolutely nothing about these engines.
