Concern: So I've had to top up the oil twice within the past week. On Friday I checked the oil and it was at the very bottom of the dip stick so I put about half of a 5q bottle in to get it to full. Today (Thursday) I checked it again and had to add almost the rest of the bottle. I was on a road trip when I added oil the first time so I did put about 700ish miles on it. I know the pivot shaft seal is leaking but I don't think I have any other leaks at all. Would the pivot shaft seal cause this or would it be leaking trans fluid? Sorry if that's a stupid question but I am just starting to get into working on my own cars. This is my second car I've owned and I would like to learn.
DTC's: None
Modifications: JBR short ram intake with turbo inlet pipe, Cobb rear motor mount, Corksport 3" catless downpipe V1, Autotech HPFP internals, Modified C6 Z06 catback exhaust straight piped, Versatune OTS high output downpipe+TIP 91oct tune, Turbosmart dual port blow off valve, Full EGR delete, VTCS delete, JBR short throw shift plate, and BC racing coilovers.
ECU/Tuning Software: Versatune
Tuner: Previous owner
Is the concern intermittent? Doesn't seem to be.
Can you duplicate the concern? I don't know
Recent Repairs: Transfer case, transmission, and rear diff serviced 20k miles ago. All 4 cv axles replaced 15k miles ago.

Pivot shaft is transmission fluid. How to instructions are posted here to make it easy.

For oil consumption, easy things are to look for leaks underneath by looking up at turbo return , etc. Oil in hotside intercooler piping, plugs for oil.

There's a few local speed owners near you; I'm in Maumelle (but often in Russellville), Kevin is in Russellville, and Fozzy is in Perryville. Oil consumption is kinda normal, like Raider said check for leaks under the car, put a sheet of cardboard down and check it in the morning. Wouldn't hurt to check the PCV valve as well.

So I took it back to the shop that changed the oil and they looked under it with me and we couldn't find a leak. I also haven't been noticing anything under the car except a small spot directly under the pivot shaft seal (I have parts coming for that in a day or 2). I texted the previous owner and asked him for his advice and he said he never had issues with oil consumption and that he was using 5w-40. I only noticed it was low on oil after I got it changed at the shop (5w-30). Could changing to 5w-40 possibly fix or at least slow down the consumption? Btw I've only had this car since the beginning of this month and it had 5w-40 in it when I got it.

It won't fix it, but might slow it down a little. I'd replace the PCV valve. What about compression? You really need to get the compression numbers to find out what the health of that engine is. Also you can inspect the plugs while you're in there.

Okay I'll order a compression tester and some of the tools I'll need. I'll be getting more tools for my bday next month as well. Like I mentioned in my original post, I haven't ever really had to work on a car besides little stuff so I'm kinda learning and collecting the tools I need as I go.

If you need a hand I just replenished my tools; I could give you a hand. You can rent a compression tester at Autozone so it wouldn't cost anything. Hopefully @Fozzy can help, too.

Wow that's super nice of you, I’d appreciate any help I can get. It’s my daily so it’s pretty important (I do have another car but I share it with my girlfriend). This seems like a great community to be a part of. I've loved the car so far besides this and a few smaller things I’ve had to figure out.

Not even gonna lie bro, I'm only 20 and I have a family of my own so I kinda don't have that many friends or community groups like this I'm a part of. So it's nice to be welcomed into a group like this and offered help like that. It shows me that there still good people out there. Appreciate you fr

Whale cum! I'm hoping we can start having more meats; again, we used to be much more active. Most of us moved on from the platform, me included; I only recently bought another MS3. I've got about $2k worth of parts ready to install, waiting for a time I can get enough help and coordinate time off. Until last month I hadn't turned a wrench in about 5 years, when I still had my Mustang; I blew 3 engines in 9 months in that car. With my first MS3, I blew 5 engines, but it was over the course of 7 years and almost 300k miles. Fozzy is our local engine builder; he's put together some strong engines. He and Kevin are both solid mechanics; I help where I can, but I wasn't blessed with much mechanical skills. I was blessed with a great job, so I help out that way. I've lost touch with Jonny and Justin; they're both in the welcome thread, both have had great success and have moved on to bigger and better things.

Yeah it would be nice to have meets and stuff like that. Even tho my car has more cosmetic issues than I'd like but at least I'm more confident in my ability to fix those things vs the mechanical stuff. Yea this is only my 2nd car and my 1st car I've ever even drove with this much hp. My engine does have like 165000 miles on it so I know sooner or later (hopefully later because I support my girlfriend and son all on my own) I'll have to get another one . It’s cool to have a car I actually like now tho if I keep enjoying it like I am now I plan on having it for 6 or so years and fixing up all the issues with it and all that.

Engine is probably fine for now. Let's get the oil consumption issue fixed so we can make it last as long as possible. I'm not sure how, but mine doesn't use (or hasn't used) any oil, and I have 216k miles. I really need to look under there and see if it has a catch can or something. Also, I just looked, and I remembered correctly; the PCV valve is a PITA to get to. It's recommended that we remove the intake manifold. Which also means we could turn it into a walnut blasting party! Clean the valves too. Since the DISI is direct injection, there's no fuel spraying onto the valves to help keep them clean. At 165k miles yours are nasty af.

One more thing: does your car smoke? Out the exhaust? If so, when? And what color? White, gray, or black?

That sounds great to me! I remember watching a video that mentioned how the valves get dirty and all that. I'd buy food and help with whatever is needed. I will of course will need to be walked through things tho.

So I don’t haven't really noticed any smoke unless I get close to redline and/or it backfires. I'll need to look at it later today to tell you the color (but its probably black). I just figured it was extra fuel from the 91oct tune. I've made sure to only put 91 in it since I got it. So the other day my brother in law was looking at it with me and he held a piece of paper behind the exhaust while I revved it a little and it put a huge black spot on the paper. Around the end of the exhaust and the bumper its black as well. Even the trunk it has a good amount of black specks. I just thought that the car was running rich because of the tune and extra fuel in the exhaust. As well and the EGR delete and Cat delete.

I just realized you're tuned with VersaTune. It wouldn't hurt to take a datalog and post it here. Also would be a good idea to have a professional tune. It's definitely going to be running rich. But it shouldn't be so rich it's afterfiring/backfiring. A log will tell us if your O2 sensor is good. It's easy to check yourself, just monitor AFR, and after it's warmed up, make sure it's constantly changing. If it's stuck at 14.8, or 14.81, it's bad.

Silly question, but maybe not. Are you wiping off the dipstick and putting it back in before you check oil level? Mine looks like it's low if I just check when I pull it out; when I put it back in, it reads full.

So I'll need a laptop to take a data log right? As well as an adapter of some sort to plug into the car? The previous owner said he would transfer the versatune license whenever I get a laptop.

That's a fair question considering I'm new to all of this, but yes l’m making sure to wipe the dipstick off.

Well I don't think the mechanic who replaced my water pump did, and he added a couple quarts and told me it was using oil. When I got home I checked it, and it was high.

For now, you can just use a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle, pair it to an Android phone (not sure if Apple has an application like Torque to monitor). I, also, don't have a laptop; I gave it to a friend. I only need it for datalogging, really. And I wrecked my last speed in January 2018.

I gotcha, I’ll do a little research and order one tonight. So do I need to do anything specific to get a good data log? Just drive to work while it’s logging or just let it idle for a bit or?

That's kinda crazy thinking back on 2018, I didn't even know how to drive then. But hey I didn't even know how to drive manual at the beginning of this month

They're like $8 on Amazon. I have one, somewhere. But it's such a useful device, and cheap, I'd get one for yourself. You can plug it into any vehicle that's OBD2 compatible.

I'm old af. Another reason I have friends help me wrench on my car: after a couple minutes, my hands get numb, and I drop my tools. Last time I dropped it on my forehead, tightening a rear endlink. Good times.
