Hello all,
I recently bought a 2010 MS3, and it has been an absolute blast.
In the 3 months of ownership, I have replaced the VVT, but a problem that has been apparent since I have had it has been this horrible oil consumption, burnt through the dipstick in 3 days with hard driving.
I have done a bit of diag on this. I have reason to think rings/valve seals are not my problem here. I have not done a leak down, but comp is 180 across the board. I pulled the plugs and all plugs look in okay condition (in relation to oil burning, slightly white on the tip, due to normal wear and tear, probably should replace them), but no oil fouling or anything such as that.
I have taken the turbo outlet pipe (one that feeds into the intercooler), and found that there is a thin film of oil there. Similarly, I have taken off the breather hose from the VC to intake just before the maf. There is a very light film of oil, but being a breather, I'm not concerned about that. Main reason for doing that is too check if its breathing heavy, which it is not (thankfully).
As for the turbo now, It has about 1.5mm side to side shaft play, axial seems minimal but cant really tell (or remember, was a little ago when I checked). No smoke at all, only on WOT I can see a smoke in the headlights of those unfortunately behind me. The smoke is mainly black, but there's a lot more visible when its nighttime and I can see the smoke in the aforementioned headlights. I believe my cats are cleaning up the smoke for the most part.
Sometimes when I turn the car off, I can see a slightly white smoke emit from the tailpipes, but again not too sure.
Stock turbo from the factory (173k kms, so like 106k miles or so).
If I drive the car like a normal sane person, it burns significantly less oil than when its getting beat on (PCV problem maybe?). I have ordered a new PCV valve to try and rectify it, hopefully it fixes it but we shall see.
Anyone got any ideas/input?
