Popping out of gear when decelerating?

I’ve been working up a Speed6 and have been mostly focussed on the engine but thought I needed a diversion.

The transmission pops out of 2nd and 3rd gear only when the accelerator is lifted (decelerating). In 3rd when it pops out there is a light ‘grinding’. 2nd goes fully into neutral when it pops out.

At one point I noticed the transmission fluid was ridiculously low. It had maybe 1qt in it. I replaced it and took it for a short test drive and it seemed like it wasn’t popping out (it’s possible it wasn’t fixed, I just drove around the block once). But the transmission leaks and the issue was back the next time I drove it and subsequent refillings didn’t fix the issue. I think the leak is coming from the seal where the transfer case is attached.

I have another transmission I’m planning on putting in eventually, but it’d helpful to understand what could be causing the popping out issue.

Thanks Raider. Anything that can be done to temporarily help?

I was considering rebuilding the other transmission I have. The seller said it was working fine when he took it off the car, but I figure since it’s not in a car right now maybe I should take advantage of that.

Thats what grinding right ? I thought the plastic shift forks wearing out so easily was why the gear popped out.

Every once and a while I see cheaply priced brass shift forks sets for the ms6 but I check again and they're gone.

That’s interesting. I was hoping the popping out wasn’t the transmission so it’d be nice if that wasn’t the case. The shifter mechanism actually is messed up, in that it doesn’t need to be pressed down to go into reverse. That made me nervous for a little while after I got it! I have considered replacing it but haven’t found a good deal on one yet.

That dont sound right at all.
 
I had this problem when I was in Colorado heading up the mountains, seemed like a fail safe thing too high of gear too low of rpm

I’ve never had the problem again since being in the Midwest [emoji2373]

Are you asking me or lasangelos?

If me then I’m using the OEM as far as I know. I haven’t looked below the knob to see the mechanism or it’s condition but I don’t have reason to think it’s not OEM. It might have been modified so that you don’t have to press it down to go into reverse—there is another unexpected modification or two to the car.

Since my engine is toast I haven’t been doing any work on the Speed6 but if there’s something I can look for which might be causing the slipping out of gear (besides the transmission) I’d enjoy doing some work on it.

What do you mean your engine is toast?

Some people have had issues popping out of gear when using a heavier shift knob
 
Check your motor mounts. If the engine is shifting it can cause the cables to move. Try adjusting the cables too.

Best guess at this point is that a rod broke and put a hole in the block :) I haven’t taken it apart enough yet to see for sure. I’m waiting until the replacement engine I bought is rebuilt. Or at least that’s the plan...

I didn’t look through your thread that far. Thanks! I have another transmission which I was planning on rebuilding. I have a book on it but your specific details will be really helpful.

I remember reading on msf that the syncro's were or might've been weight matched. I think its more related to a short shift plate somehow.

I picked up a perm hex knob and its basically heavy af but my 2nd gear syncros were long shot before that. If anything, there seems to be less slippage. Rando 2 cents.
