It turns out that the combination of 140,XXX miles and 26psi on a daily tune don't make a reliable car unfortunately.....

So I was running an IWG ATP GT3076r along with all supporting mods and spraying 10gph of methanol. Fun car to drive back and forth from work everyday. Initial vdynos showed close to 400whp, but after a series of events with an improperly sealed valve cover, the engine started showing signs of it's demise. Dynoed 369whp about a month before zzb but at that time we were losing a lot of oil and CC pressures were getting high. Finally, she decided to kick the bucket about two days before ENM 2016 on the Tail of the Dragon.

Fast forward to now and the money spending is starting. I'm waiting to get me block machined until I have the pistons, as that was what my machine shop asked. Probably picking up a 5862 or 6262 soon so I can make some serious jam on this motor.

Already ordered the SP63 Pro Series pistons, Manley rods, Carrillo 65lb valve springs, picked up a FJ Performance T3 exhaust manifold and DP so I'm excited to be going EWG and join the big boys there. Hopefully the pistons will come in soon so I can start the ball rolling with this build. Once I hook up with the machine shop I'll probably bite the bullet and order all my gaskets.

so what do you mean that the unseated valve cover was ur issue? do you mean that you ran low on oil and that is what caused your issue or was it pushing the car at 400 whp at that mileage was the issue

I bought a VC that someone had gotten powercoated and the oil baffles on the inside were not sealed with RTV (or whatever gasket material is usually used). Basically the air/oil separator was just letting all the oil through the breather into my intake. I am sure this wasn't entirely the problem, but my motor was healthy and strong before this incident.

I eventually got a gen2 VC and SP63 breather cap but by this time she was already going down hill.

are you talking about the plate on the inside of a gen 1 vc? I didn't know it had to be sealed with rtv. I got mine powdercoated and I don't think I have had this issue

Yeah on my VC that came from factory had a light seal on it. The one that was PC'd had nothing whatsoever between the plate and the baffles when I opened it. It acted like a straw that the intake could just suck oil through.

oh damn that's nuts, I never heard of that. I haven't noticed oil in my intake but I will keep a eye out for such a thing. I am sure you noticed it right away tho? maybe smoke at idle or something

It didn't even smoke too bad! In normal driving it was perfect but after a good 4th gear pull, I'd get smoke on decel. Oil started coming out of the BOV though so that was a sign.

My buddy who drove me there needed to run to work so unfortunately we couldn't get too far. Tomorrow though shipping tracking says I should get in my exhaust manifold, dump tube, DP, pistons, and head studs so I'm pretty excited to get my hands on them.

I'm running ~380/380 in good weather on E30 spraying a CM7 nozzle. I just upgraded to a CM10 nozzle to help even more. Went BT at 42k and at 68k now. Hoping that my solid tune, good driving habits, and meticulous maintenance gives me a good, long life like yours.

That's real respectable power! I'll be going with ethanol for this build, how bothersome is it to keep it at E30 every fill up?

Not bothersome at all. The E85 station is 5 minutes away. I just determine how much fuel I can be sure to put in and do ~30% of it as ethanol and ~70% of it as 93. My LTFTs are on point, so it's working well. I usually wait until I'm almost empty, but that's not necessary. The benefit is that I end up getting a little closer to a completely full tank that way.
 
You seem to have wrung more miles out of the motor than I have been planning for with mine, which gives me some hope that I won't need to rebuild before 150k. Glad to see that you didn't install a viewing window by accident as it tends to make things a bit more expensive.

God that manifold looks good. Interested to see how much clearance you've got after its installed. Thanks for putting it on display.
 
Little update - pulled the motor yesterday so that is behind me, now I just need to start undressing the girl and disassemble so the machine shop can work their magic! Turns out I had a Luk clutch which explains why a 145k mile clutch wasn't slipping at all under the loads I was showing it. Also, I bought a parts washer and it's a little worrisome/awesome how well that thing works.

What type of solvent (or water/cleaner mixture) are you running through the parts washer? It's on my list of items for the new garage in a couple months but I see a lot of different opinions on what works.

Whatever you're running obviously works pretty well.

It's a water-based solvent that was right under the parts washer in Harbor Freight. Link - I used one gallon and filled the rest of it with water so it's 20 to 1 or so.
 
Took my time last night putting all bolts into their own labeled baggies so reassembly shouldn't be so terrible. Got the head and oil pan off and then my buddy wanted to go home (he was my ride to the garage) so that's all she wrote.
With all the carbon in my cylinders you could probably make a few diamonds:

Little bit of scoring but that's what machinework is for. I could feel it with my fingernail but that's what high miles and high boost do I guess.

Slow moving build but a build nonetheless. Pistons were rather shot but luckily my crank was in perfect condition so far as I could see.

This week I should have the block and head to the machine shop. They quoted me a two week turnaround for cleaning, boring, and decking and after that, my head is off to @Javy@relentless for some porting, polishing, and assembly!
