Looks like my U Joints are toast. Removed the driveshaft/propeller shaft and all the U Joints feel grainy.
Has anyone had any luck rebuilding these? I'm going to stop by a Driveshaft shop once our weather clears up. Was just wondering if anyone else has tried getting these rebuilt.
This info needs to be fact checked...Im pulling it from the back of my mind.
The front joint can be regreased and you can use a Subi CV shaft boot. Read here.
The U-joints are replaceable but not listed. The shaft shop tech will have to measure them. I have a shaft with new U-joints hanging on my garage wall, but have been delinquent finding out what part numbers. One joint is for an MPV and the other 2 are from a 70s Mazda pickup I think. Bearings for the hangers are also available... https://www.jimellismazdaparts.com/...Center-Support-Bearing/1898754/MA0225155.html
They are a standard roller bearing and can be cross referenced. Pressing them out/in could be the difficult part.
At one point I had taken the time to find what U Joints are supposed to fit, because I was going to rebuild it myself. But that was years ago and I can't find where I saved my excel file with measurements and part numbers.
Driveshaft shop in my area won't rebuild it. Stopped by today so they could look at.
I'm considering buying a used eBay one to try and rebuild it myself, but then I won't be able to balance it. Maybe I just need to save up for the DSS aluminum one.
