Stratified Stage 3 93 Tune - Log Review

Was previously tuned by Dizzy and was very happy with it, but after going in for a tune touch up and finding out that he has abandoned AP V2 support, I went over to Stratified for an OTS+ Stage 3 93 tune.

How does this log look? This is after one tune revision - they had to pull a little bit of upper RPM timing due to some KR. This was taken on a slightly uphill, flat road last week. Oddly enough, they are hesitant to do another revision on it, claiming that they've extracted everything they can from this setup within reason after just one revision. I had always thought that MS3 tuning gospel was to go for a custom tune with at least 4-5 revisions before calling it quits, but maybe they've tuned so many of these things by now that it's not necessary.

  • Corksport TMIC
  • Magnaflow high flow secondary cat
  • CP-E SRI
  • HTP 2.5" TIP
Curious to hear what folks think. To me, I think it's a touch conservative, and Dizzy's tune pulled slightly harder - but this runs smoother. Yeah, this is a little uphill, but this should be a 275whp car in all reality.

I've had car this car since I was active during the MSF days - 8 years and 98k miles now, so this is probably the last thing I'll do before moving on in the next year or two.

is that v dyno with a cf of 1.01 or is it standard dynojet?

You're getting a hint of KR @5200. It isn't over 2.0 so it's nothing to worry about, but keep an eye on it and see if it's consistent or gets worse in warmer weather. If it's consistent you can try adding a gallon of e85 to your tank, topping off, then seeing if it's still there. If it goes away then it could be real. If it stays then something might be loose or rattling around.

It does look pretty maxed out to me. The wg duty cycle is basically maxed at 5300+ so you aren't gonna get more boost. Can't really add timing because you're getting that little hint of KR. fueling is fine at mid 11's. It just goes rich to suppress that knock. I don't see much to be gained.

I had a similar set up to you but with an ets tmic instead of corksport, no 2nd cat, and a cat back. The second cat is probably costing you a pound of boost or so. I didn't save logs but I did save a screenshot of a v dyno on 93 tune.

pro d 2 is the 93 tune with the k04 and mods listed above. Honestly looks pretty similar. Making power on 93 on the k04 is hard. The red and blue runs are a CST4 on 93 (same other mods, stock downpipe still) if you wonder what going past the k04 looks like. Slightly better than an e30 k04.
 
On phone so not going through log, stratified can be a little more conservative but that's also safe for the engine. Remember off the shelf tunes (OTS) are just that, they build baseline tuned that will be safe, do maf cal maybe one revision and Boom you're done, better than stock tune slightly modified for your specific engine but nothing special. If you want the full 3+ revisions then you need to pay for the full tune where you'll see stratified pull even more out of the engine. That being said it's interesting that you weren't told to buy more if you wanted more of a revision. But again pretty common mods, they know where you'll probably end up.
 
For comparison's sake, here is my last log with Dizzy's tune. This one is a 4th gear pull. For Virtual Dyno, I'm using the Dynojet with a CF of 1.09. Different day from back in April, so slightly cooler IATs and BATs. Dizzy seems to target slightly richer AFRs and brings in more midrange boost than Stratified does, and up top, they're similar.

If you had the same intake during dizzy tune you can try that map now and see what happens. Stratified boost does look a little low in the midrange compared to your dizzy tune and my freektune
 
Log observations: latest log BAT 20F higher, 5.04 sec full throttle vs 9.51 previously (you also hit floor 300rpm later) either way thats 4 sec less it's getting to 6k. boost within 2psi, intake temps ~15F higher in 2nd log, old tune has knock at 2.17 at 4762 Rpm, new highest is 1.89.
You're within 15 HP, which I'd say it actually good based on 1 revisions you have less knock AFR is more tuned in with less fuel and less knock I call that a win Especially since you were actually on the throttle less for the new tune. Really you need to take a few logs on a day like you did in your original tune to get a better comparison those hotter temps could easily equate to 5-10 HP meaning you're actually within 5-10HP of previous tune, now torque being 30 lower that's probably the killer but again different day, different car weights etc all going to change your numbers. To me looks pretty decent. like I said stratified is known to be a little more conservative which is not a bad thing on stock blocks. You could probably get more out of it sure but really taking that second cat out with a testpipe Is where I'd start.

I reloaded the Dizzy tune on Sunday and hope to be able to take some logs in the next few days. The car feels stronger in the midrange for sure with Dizzy's tune. There is also some weird SWAS-related stuff happening on the Stratified tune when I accelerate hard and turn in 1st and 2nd gear that is totally absent with Dizzy's tune.

So, some background on why I went with a new tune at all: I moved from NYC (which has easily available 93 octane and access to E85) to Maine, which has some 93 and a whole lot of 91 with zero E85. I'm still running Shell 93 regardless of location. What I noticed, however, was more KR creeping into my logs on the Dizzy tune after moving up here - I used to be able to take pulls with very little to no knock back in NYC. I had been suspecting poorer local fuel quality as the culprit, hence the request for a touch up by Dizzy, then hearing from him that he cannot tune on an AP V2 any longer (which is weird to me, but OK). That's what led me to Stratified. The initial Stratified 93 tune I received generated some high KR values - more than 4.0 on one pull. The current Stratified tune has a little bit of timing pulled out and that's the one that I uploaded in my first post.

Will follow up with those new logs soon. 265-275whp should be achievable within reason on this car with these mods, so we'll see. Thanks all.
 
don't get hung up on numbers, especially v dyno numbers. I barely cracked 300 whp on the k04 even e30 on cf 1.01. That seems pretty low compared to others. But at the dragstrip in 80* weather I hot lapped like 4-5 13.4-13.8's at 107-108 mph. 106 if I didn't flat foot shift it. That trap speed is on the higher side of k04 cars. so whatever. Just enjoy it, it'll do what it'll do. Get a tune you can rip on without worrying about, that's where the real fun is.
 
Log taken earlier this evening on the Dizzy tune. BATs are close between both logs. Looks like Stratified just eeks out Dizzy. Surprisingly, the Dizzy tune feels stronger in the midrange at part throttle and just in general is a beefier feeling tune driving around town than Stratified, but the numbers here show that the Stratified tune is running a little leaner, hitting higher load values, and generating a bit more power. It's close, though. Tonight's pull felt very strong and smooth to me.

Could be the throttle map was changed from the stock profile on the Dizzy tune, so it is more linear, making it more responsive particularly down low.
