buying tires here shortly. Anyone have experience with these? Tire rack has them for $104 per tire. also running a 225/40/18 on stock genpu wheels.

Any experiences with wider widths with genpu wheels? (stock suspension/no pull/no roll)

What else is a decently cheap comparable summer tire you guys run?
 
They're in the "meh" to "decent" range. I've never run them on the Speed, but I have had them on other cars when I needed a cheap decent tire in a pinch. Straight line grip is okay but not great. Lateral grip is better. Wet traction is pretty good for daily driving if you aren't trying to drive in the rain for lap times. I know a lot of people that swear by them, but I personally don't think much of them.

If I remember correctly, someone posted on here that Tire Rack has 235/40/18 Hankook RS3s for like $97 a piece. Might be worth looking to see how much the 225/40/18 might be if they make that size.

yeah just checked tire rack on the RS3's. 235/40/18 is like $184 a tire and a 225 is $163 a tire. It seemed like the HTR Z III got pretty good and numerous reviews

Well damn, sucks those are so expensive. For that much per tire it would be silly not to get Michelin PSS.

But yeah, the Sumitomo's are decent and like I said I know a lot of people that like them. I'm probably just used to stickier rubber now. I seem to remember the HTR ZIII likes to get really greasy after a few heat cycles, but I could be misremembering that part. They were definitely on the unpredictable side though.

They're certainly not bad tires and decent bang for the buck as they can usually be had for pretty cheap.

I think that's what I'm going to do as well. Maybe not all the way to 16s, but I think I'm definitely going to grab a set of 17" wheels with tires that I'll use specifically for Dragon runs and maybe some autox here and there. That way the more expensive 18" tires can stay on daily/street duty.
 
I've purchased a set of 17" Gold RPF1's, shopping for tires now. Hoping for a big sale or rebate offers before ENM/MDC.

Damn, I'm jealous. I'm hoping to have the second set of wheels/tires for fall camp, I don't think I can swing it for ENM.
 
I have owned three different sets of HTR ZIII's. One set on my MS6 and now two sets on my VW. Both AWD, these tires are great for slow cars. The MS6 had way to much power for them in the corners, great on the highway and in rain, but heavy spirited driving.. no go. The VW however, my first set lasted about 60k. The second set that I'm on now is around 5k. If you are just daily these things than they might be ok for you. They are great in the rain and snow and dry (for a slow car mind you, at 3900lbs and 270whp/270flb I have had no major complaints).

Now, I have had some lateral grip issues with these tires on dry pavement. They really don't like to stick well during high lateral forces are put on them. Which in turn means be careful in the rain and snow when cornering. These are a great cheap tire if you baby the car. If you want something that the car is going to benefit from, you are going to want to spend a lot more money.

My recommendations if you want performance summer tires:
Dunlop ZII Star Spec are great, price isn't terrible but under 200.. barely. Great tires, but they dont last very long. I had 3 Sets of these on my MS3 and one on my MS6. GREAT TIRES, and for an Extreme Performance Summer tire, these do pretty well in the rain before they get eaten up.

Hankook RS-3 v2 A decent amount cheaper, also great tires, but they wont last long either. I had two sets of these on my MS3. I don't recommend driving crazy in the rain with these or aggressive on the road before they warm up, but once they are warm they will stick very well.

BFGoodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 These are even cheaper than the Hankook's and have great ratings, I personally have never used these but have not heard anything negative about them.

Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Now these... these bad boys are a little bit more than the BFG's but cheaper than the other two. They are amazing all season tires and have been proven on the track. Great tread wear and life expectancy. If an All season is what you want with great performance, these are my highest recommendation.

All and all, the four tires here are great all around tires, and you have a decent range of price and performance here. So many options. But as @Gandalf stated, if you can get your hands on a set of 17's, tires will be a little cheaper.

I'll be mounting Bridgestone RE-71's on the RPF1's. Still uncertain on the size, will probably be 235/45 or 245/45. The 235's will fit without spacers or rolling the rear fenders but the 245's are 1/2" wider and would offer better straight line grip. I believe the 235's will work better on the Dragon and have sharper turn in. RPF1's are 17x8 +45. The 245's might be too wide, hurt cornering, require spacers and a roll.

Why not go with a 40 sidewall?
 
all great info here. thanks guys. Yeah RPF1's would be choice especially for the weight savings, awesome wheel overall, and cheaper tires. Im going to look into all thats listed above.

We get what we pay for with tires it seems.I always looked into Continental DW and I had a pair of pilot sports previously that worked pretty well. I just cant get over the price of tires but hey thats me being a cheap ass

I posted about the RS3's. It was 235/45/r17s that were on special for $97. Looks like they've jumped to $108 per tire.

I currently run the above 235/45 on 17x8's and I honestly love this combo personally. Im rolled because my +38 offset, but beside that, no other fitment issues
 
This might be a bit too late, but maybe it'll help another person looking at the same tire. In short, stay away. They're very mediocre in dry condition, and in my experience with them, they're borderline scary in the rain. They are however quite comfy and quite.
I think if you want to stay in that price range, the Hankook Ventus V12 EVOs might be a better choice. Good luck

Personally, I'd go with the 235/45/17 for a 17x8. The 245s will definitely hurt turn in I think. 245 is best on a 8.5 IMO.

Gotcha, thanks for the correction. As I was typing I wasn't 100% sure if it was for 17s or 18s.

235/45 or 225/45. If you want more speed in each gear, go 235, if you want shorter gears so you can use the next gear up sooner, 225.
