What are these mods?

Continuing with my desire to understand my Speed6 ... I noticed two things the other day.

Here’s the first one, and I’m assuming it’s not the stock setup. The right end of the fuel rail is at the bottom of the photo. It looks like someone added that black stopper with a clamp. What could be the reason?

The second is this pipe with some tape that seems to be serving no purpose. I don’t know what that pipe is for or why someone would disconnect it.

Thanks!

Is the first one a throttle body coolant bypass? I think that might be one of the feed/return lines from the block but I'm not 100%.

Thanks SharksInSpace. I know it’s tough to see in my photo. Both coolant lines are going to the throttle body.

I’m working on my car now so I’ll try and get a better photo.

The first one is the TB coolent bypass.
That pipe is the same in mine and in others, I believe it is an overflow pipe.

I’d follow both lines off the TB to see where they go.

Second pic was for verifying something on the assembly line from what I have learned over the years. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the replies! So the 2nd thing is nothing.

I forgot to take another photo of the 1st thing. A few weeks ago I replaced the inner coolant line on the throttle body and the outer line is easily visible (it connects to a metal pipe lower down). Both hoses are OEM and so I’m sure there’s no modification.

That little pipe in the photo is about 2” long. It’s on the driver’s side of the engine right near the top of the block. It could be attached to the head but I don’t think so.

I’ve been trying to look through the service manual hoping I’ll see it accidentally, but it’s 9000+ pages... :)

I’ve started taking apart my poor broken engine and got a better photo of one part in question. It does appear to be a coolant line but it’s not one of the lines going to the throttle body. I can’t figure out where the other end would go. Not that it matters any, I’m just curious.

The EGR line is the pipe below and the one green connector attaches to the fuel rail. Just for understanding of where this is.

Is the the throttle body lines but just looped together bypassing the TB?

The innermost TB line goes to a similar looking pipe a few inches above and back from this one, closer to the EGR valve. The outer TB line goes down to a black pipe. Both of those TB lines have had coolant in them every time I’ve taken them off. And both TB hoses are OEM and follow their natural shape.

I'll check tomorrow if I remember. But pretty sure that capped port is specific to the ms6 and runs to the radiator

If it is specific to the MS6, then perhaps that engine was from a MS3? The person I bought it from said he replaced the engine (I don’t remember him saying what car it came from and at the time I didn’t really understand what I was buying... :) ).

So what would be the effect of not connecting a coolant line, possibly for the AWD system as Meica suggested? I’m rebuilding a motor and want to make sure once it’s eventually done that I don’t not connect something that should have been connected.

you have some flexability there.
if you're rebuilding, then you have that malfunction junction right there all easy to route, you may be able to delete/reroute a bit, etc

there is a mazdaspeed sales PDF out there. dunno the name specific. its a bit consumer oriented but it had a nice flow diagram of the coolant system. not like part numbers detail, but a 4 color chart of the whole system, with flow direction from here to there. dig about

The one you have on your car right now is for a speed 3, thats why its blocked. The 6 dosent have that extra nipple, probably because of the transfercase cooler or something.

The one on the right is for a speed6 and the left is for the speed3. I also checked the part numbers, checks out.
