Anyone else love/hate logging for tune?

Trying to get my first real log in for my new Hypnotic tune. I went out tonite with the goal of getting my WOT log. I found a place to get my MAF log earlier which, while annoying, was not as bad as the WOT. Trying to find a road that isn't a race track (or some place with a dyno) is nearly fucking impossible around me. Interstate is always an option I suppose but typically too busy. I don't want to risk anyone's life (nor my own!). Many of the back roads around here that could have been candidates were either too narrow, too bumpy or too busy. And I went for a 4th gear pull so I knew I'd be movin pretty fast.

I finally found a road and gave it a go. As it was night time it was doubly scary for me since I didn't really know the road well. Plus it was sorta back country so any second a deer could cross the damn road. And I'm nearly certain when I finally slowed down and the cars that were coming my way included a cop. Phew!

Checked my log when I got home and I did a damn shitty job. I only hit 76% throttle and 6361 rpms. Der. I was watching my tach which is not 100% accurate I know but also trying to drive and not die. Well whatever, hopefully it's not totally useless.

I also sorta hate 'beating' on the car. I never send it to redline. I think the closest I get is when I road rage and maybe hit 5k. I know the car was built to do those things but I still feel bad giving it the beans. But even worse when I give it the beans and find out they were inadequate beans! :(

I love to do logs more than I do racing unless they're with friends that I KNOW respect the roads equally and know spots that are safe for us and other people.

I agree with being scared of the popo but that's a necessary risk if you want to fully optimize your vehicle and mods.

5k come on!!! it's got more left in it even on a k04! 76% is the normal max for the APP pid 6.3k is good for the majority of the tune especially on a k04 as long as the road is straight and flat the vdyno curve will be good even then it's not too important the data is more important

What the hell happened to the other 24%??

The other 24% is for load control by the ECU via throttle body.

As far as logs, get a radar detector if you find a good road that cops tend to be on. It'll pay for itself in the long run.

Finding a good road without wildlife or a lot of traffic is actually the hardest part.

You'll need just as much road for your MAF log as you will for WOT. At least until you go big turbo.

That anxiety never goes away, you just get used to it.

Thanks for the details :) I’ve done logs before but that was 5 years ago and have moved since then. So I lost my road that I had used. I nearly stress over a potential deer running out than a cop.

I stressed less about the MAD cuz I won’t be doing 106 during that log. But yeah it took a bit of road. That MAF logging takes practice. I still didn’t stay out of boost completely.

I used to roll with a radar detector. Maybe I need another one.

Logs in my Fiesta are definitely nerve wracking because a 4th gear pull form 2500-6700 takes foreverrrrrrr. In my MS3 though I didn't mind much because 4th tapped out crazy fast haha

Ha! I think my log is 15 seconds. Subtract a few as I didn’t stop the log til I had slowed quite a bit.

You could always run 3rd gear logs unless too much powa or tuner requested.
Back when I lived in Chicago I had to do 4th gear logs and went on a long, flat, stretch of freeway around 3am, no cops.
Now that I'm in Colorado and don't rip up 3rd, it's easier to do on back roads.

I usually find 3rd gear logs...I run into the same issue where I could do 4th around here without cops and safe away from smalls towns the roads are broken up. That and going 50km/h over here gets your car taken away, and 30 day license suspension with a racing and stunt driving charge. Thankfully I have a track down the road (45min) that's does a test and tune night every other Friday for 20$ so that's an option if there's a track near you.

The other option is to rent a dyno and have the tuner remote tune while you're there but that'll cost a pretty penny

There is a race track ‘near’ here but it’s about an hour and I dunno if they let the public use it for anything. Hadn’t checked.

There are places that will dyno the car and really that’s all I need but for $100 it ain’t worth it. We’ll see what Rob says. He requested a 4th gear pull and so I dunno if subsequent pulls will need to be the same.

And yeah those back road speed limits are 50 or 55. Wonder what the charge is for 55 over the limit lol

My suggestion, bet a bigger turbo and more power lol ;) lol.

4th gear logs at 575+whp from 50-125 take 8 seconds and then another few seconds to slow back down to the speed limit haha

I always had to do my pulls on a back road at like 2am. Looking back, a deer could've made for a bad time. I'm sure Rob can tune around a 3rd gear pull. No shame in being safe man.

I do 3rd gear WOT logs, and yeah MAF runs are always a pain in the ass. Even on rural roads it's difficult to find somewhere I can go that slow for that long without impeding people or whatever. For WOT runs I worked out a nice routine though. I use an interstate that goes pretty rural about 15 minutes out from home, and that the wife drives home on. If she reports heavy presence of the 50, we don't log that night. When we do go out, she comes along and watches Waze for police presence so I can concentrate on logging etc. We drive out to where the freeway is rural-ish and have specific exits where we exit, then do a log run on the entrance ramp. The ~85 at the end generally makes for reasonable merging into the traffic. So we do it at an exit, then at a rest area (which also provides a good place to stop and get a drink or take a walk to calm the nerves), then at the turn-around exit, then at a rest area, then it's a nice cruise home. All around the trip takes probably an hour and I actually find it to be a kind of fun couple activity. But as mentioned it definitely took some getting used to.

I did a remote dyno tune and IMO it was well worth it. $200 for the dyno time on top of the tune. But it was done in 2 hours including loading and unloading the car, no worry about going to jail or the tune taking weeks to sort out.

Damn dude. You have a committed wife. Good for her! My wife helped suggest roads but the end. Plus with our toddler that wouldn’t work.

And yeah it does get the nerves up. After my run I drove home going around 40mph even in the 55 zone. Was a rush and my guilt encouraged me to drive slower. :)

No complaints! When I needed to get a car she was the one who suggested the Mazdaspeed in the first place, and then after I drove it she encouraged me to just go get it if I was that obsessed with it. LOL.

She also comes to most of our events, in fact the going terMInator joke is that they don't care if I'm there as long as I bring her....

I had to talk to my tuner about the 78% throttle thing to. I read the log wrong and thought I was looking at accelerator pedal position. I’m lucky enough to have a few spots in my area to safely do 4th gear wot pulls. When I see headlights coming in the distance I just shut it down and start over.
