Best Engine Oil - All Mod Levels

how do you even find the cP besides random googling? I found it on BITOG for the mobil 1 euro 5w40 but there was no source so I'm blindly trusting some guy is right. It ain't listed on the exxon site

after more research... it appears that guy likes a3/b4 because it has a min HTHS of 3.5, and he likes non-dino bases which is III+ or IV. so that's how he landed on PP euro 5w40

So my take is sure, high shear is good, but I'm only doing isolated 1-3rd gear rips. So LSPI protection will be of more benefit to me than worrying about oil shearing, even doing a few rips in the AZ heat.

I think RP 5w30 is just fine for what I do. Good enough LSPI protection, good enough HTHS, good enough viscosity, good availability, and good price.

He said the penz plat euro 5w40 was also API sp which has LSPI requirements. He didn’t think it met dexos1 gen2 because of viscosity. But the uoa still looks bad to me on bitog. It has similar zinc to rp but way higher calcium

@mangosmoothie, before I meandered over to MSO forums from MSF, I had consistently been running Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 and still had enough leftover for 2 or 3 oil changes, so that is what I'm currently running.

I plan to do a UOA on it, but can also run a VOA on it if you'd like.

Euro engines have been turbo-charged and direct injected for a long time, so my guess is that they might not want to pay for certifying their oil to Dexos (maybe).

I think on page 3 of this thread, I posted a link to a VOA for this oil from BITOG. But as mentioned, I'll do a UOA (in like 5 months...hang tight, haha) and if you want, I can send a VOA in as well.

TLDR:
1. Dispersants are important as soot in the oil can eat up valve chains; look for API SP or ILSAC GF-6A test to verify good
2. Oil needs to get HOT in these engines; short trips will allow for fuel accumulation causing increased wear
3. LSPI happens at low RPMs with high cylinder pressures; look for same certifications as point 1.
4. One cause of LSPI is calcium based detergents

Royal Purple is certified for this:

Castrol Synthetic Edge also supports this and is cheaper, VW guys with DI seem to love it.

It's also now dexos 1 gen 2, good to know RP is not cheap here perhaps it's time to test out the OEM recommend oil again since it meets all the things.

Note @Duey1083 Kirkland oil doesn't meet these specs enki is talking about

It's probably only the mfg recommended oil because money changed hands.

The main point of the post was adding the certs to look for.

Yes that's probably correct and I appreciate you adding things to look for.

Hmm actually looking at prices again, Castrol edge increased their prices turns out RP is now 1$ cheaper per oil change here in Canada land than it. Perhaps I'll pickup Castrol on sale and do some fresh UOAs comparing it to my RP use.

Keep in mind when changing oils you should do a reduced OCI on that first interval; some oils may not play nice together.

So I in fact searched just this thread for Liquid Moly and came back "no results". Wondering if anyone has ventured into using this oil on their MS3? Whenever the first oil change comes around I'll be using Liquid Moly Special TEC AA 5w30. It shows API SP so it would meet the Mazda Specifications as per manual. I've had a very good experience with their products so will move forward with it on the MS3 but just wondering if anyone out there has used it. If curious here is a link to the oil:

Just throwing it out there that I’m finally on the Royal Purple bandwagon and I have better oil pressure with RP than with anything else I have used. With the Castrol it was really low (sub 20 PSI) warm at idle. With RP I have not seen it dip under 20 PSI at all.

This is simply to do with the fact that the oil is thicker then it’s given rating. “5w30” sure. But their 30 might be castrols xw20.

So is anyone running 0w-40 or 5w-40? If so have we decided what's the best option?

I've been researching this the past few days and obviously a Dexos 1 Gen2 or even Gen3 oil can not be found in those weights.

The only 0w-40 I have found that makes mention of Dexos is Amsoil Signature. It's not a Dexos certified oil but they claim to exceed the standard.

What I did find with the Euro oils was MB 229.52 which includes an LSPI test. As well as a couple VW certs that also address LSPI.

I haven't really been able to find much about how these ratings stack up to the Dexos ratings though.
