Bought a Speed6 last week. Loads of fun so far!

LOL, I have 2 ms6 transmissions, 2 rear diffs, 3 PTO's, two ms3 transmissions, and four complete long blocks that are all busted with all accessories, harnesses and brackets... keep these cars long enough... you end up having enough parts for 3 or 4 cars, but none of them will make one run.

She's BEAUTIFUL. Only 90,000 miles. Already found unfired shotgun shells, 9mm ammo, .223, and a live lizard inside the car. We're making money on this one. HKS BOV, Mazdaspeed CAI, HPFP upgraded, SURE rear diff mount, Corksport diff brace, Whiteline sway bar, and enough broken up tiles to refinish a crappy rental home bathroom. +++ about 30 old joint roaches in the ash tray. Fires right up and drives fine aside from the snapped rear control arm and the fact that there's zero coolant in the radiator.

When you checked chain tension, was the crank at TDC? Doesn't look like it in the pictures. Even with no chain slap marks on the TC, could still be a potential issue.

Been a while, but I hope the offer is still good for VVT questions. I'm in the middle of swapping a "good" engine out of a wrecked 6. I pulled the pan off to do the balance shaft delete and install a MassiveSpeed baffle, and I found the pin (?) from the VVT gear in the pan. Pulled the valve cover and confirmed that's where it came from. It doesn't seem to have skipped timing, and the car was running fine. I have a full timing kit in the garage and planned on doing it with the updated VVT gear, anyway.

My question - Is it worth putting the new timing kit on this engine? How likely is it that the engine is trashed and I should find another option? The "pin" isn't all beat up, so I don't think it spent much time ping-ponging around before it found its' way to the oil pan. 90,000 miles on the engine.

Silver lining - I discovered through this process that my other Speed6 came with a Corksport top-mount! Pretty useful considering I now have two Speeds that don't work.

Personally, unless you plan on rebuilding very soon, I would 100% do the timing. You don't want to question it later and have it be a worry of not if, because with that mileage it's a ticking time bomb, but when it will happen.

Save yourself a future headache and do the timing.

Oh yeah - the retainer cap(?), spring, and a bit of the gear itself have left the party. I put this out on a Speed group on FB, and it sounds like the consensus is that the rest of the engine should be fine to proceed with as long as it didn't skip timing or send metal all through the engine. I have a full, updated timing kit already sitting in my garage, but I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a waste of time (ha) if the engine was compromised after the VVT failure. Planning to get it done over the weekend.

Timing job is all wrapped up. Pretty straight-forward. The only "stressful" parts were tightening everything in place and hoping it's where it's supposed to be. Everything's lined up and looks to be ready for action.

While it's on the stand, I went ahead and did the BSD and installed the Massivespeed pan baffle. Letting the intake valves soak for a scrape and blast. Waiting for a reusable intake manifold gasket to show up for full reassembly using my old manifold that's ported and has the VTCS deleted. Swapping over EGR delete, BNR turbo, and a few other odds and ends. Based on the amount of doo-doo that came out of the donor's transfer case, I'm going to use my old transmission and transfer case. Shooting for having it all back together by the first of the year.
