Building for the road course...again

gave wiseco a call.
My wrist pins were the “kit” option. 71 grams

their heavy duty pins weigh in at 116grams. 99% sure these would be way too heavy. Not sure though. Will see what my tuner says.

Wiseco is willing to help me out on pricing for a piston/pins

More calling around/research shows the following

wiseco Kit pin wall thickness - 0.137”
standard pin for any other off the shelf piston 0.180”

there we have it. Wrist pin was definitely not up to the task.

Spoke to realstreet performance as those guys know their shit and buddy suggested maybe the wiseco piston but with a CP wrist pin. They have a pretty crazy material they use that allows it to be slightly heavier but significantly stronger. Wall thickness of 0.180” as well.

Probably why the engine said fuck it; each cylinder likely had different compression, which may cause all kinds of heresy with harmonics.

Agreed. Something like this must have been going on. My guess is the pins were oval for at least a little while before one let go.

I’m guessing my other 3 rods/pistons are fucked. Fuuuuck

Could have also bent more than one (unless they are press-fit instead of free floating) and had it cam both up and down. I feel like you'd have felt something like that though.

Tear down day showed us nothing is reusable. Nothing. Other 3 pistons seemed to have no issues in the wrist pin area either so that theory is out.

Pistons are trashed from eating shrapnel. Rods MIGHT be ok which would be nice but not sure if I trust them.

Rod bearings were all super clean other than the failed cylinder.

Main bearings we joked about reusing. They were all exactly as installed. Almost like we were on the money with those clearances and oiling upload_2024-9-2_20-30-41.gifstrategy.

There is some slight bearing wear maybe from the explosion or maybe from some dirt getting in there but absolutely nothing abnormal or bad.

One failed retainer on cylinder 4. Not sure if this came before or during the explosion

Oil pump was trashed. It ate some shrapnel and was kinda locked up. It’s gone in the bin. That was a 4piston RRC pump. $800cad. Purchased before I knew it was not necessary. Too bad.

Cylinders 4 camshaft shows some real witness marks from valve bounce/float. Maybe happened before or during the explosion. Not sure. This was interesting. Also cylinder 4. The other rollers feel a little tight. Little bound up. Will need replacing which sucks since they’re incredibly hard to find. I guess I need a head anyways so whatever

Seems valve train will go in the bin. Cams may go in the bin. Crank is beat up. Weights are all marked up. Crank may be OK but as I have another who cares. It’ll get tossed I guess.

Kinda what I expected. Entire thing is throw away at this point. Great

Few pictures from my last even. Car looks great out there.

It’s looking like the car will get a stock k20z3 for now just to get back to life.
Found an engine local for $900 with intake manifold. Those sell all day long for 350 so I’ll sell that.

Guys including accessories as well so I’ll have the starter I need lmao.

Bell housing I found local up the street from me, $250.

$1150 to get back on track ain’t bad. Sure the car won’t be as fast but the plan is to collect k24 parts on the side for another build.

I’m still trying to make my September 15th race but that’s not looking great. We’ll see though

Honestly just getting it running regardless of how is great. You don't want it sitting broken all winter too easy for that to turn into five years

100% this. This is my biggest thing here. Just having it running and driving will be enough for now. I’ll either get this engine tomorrow or another one next week. If I can’t make the event whatever no big. Still have a few track days before end of the season. The car might even be somewhat competitive still next season. Maybe lower class.

Over winter more rear sway bar and that’s about it I guess. Not bad

Spent sometime today chopping my oil pan baffle out of my oil pan. It actually came out pretty nicely!

I’ve got a bell housing I sourced locally for $250. Not too bad. Might grab that or might just steal the bell housing from my other trans. We’ll see

Also found a k20 locally. $1000. Wanted to grab it today but of course no one is available today.

I don’t think I’ll make my September 15th race but I’ll get in a few more track days before the end of the season.

Planning to have the car alive again hopefully by this coming weekend. We’ll see!

New to me engine has arrived. Dude dropped it off in my garage with the lift gate on his truck. I’ve never had such a stress free engine pickup/drop off lol

Neglected valve cover gasket leak and timing cover leak has made an absolute mess here but pulling the valve cover I couldn’t believe my eyes how clean it was in there.

I will degrease the thing. Fresh RTV all around. Timing components were done at some point because I can see the paint pen on the timing marks from whatever shop did the job.

Am thinking to throw my 2007 tsx cams at it maybe? I know theres too much back and forth on those but maybe worth it? Idk. Theyre debated a lot on if they’re worth it or not but they have shown gains of up to 10whp and 10wtq on a stock engine. Stock valve train. Just drop in it and go.

For those wondering this engine was $700cad or $515 usd. That’s like pocket change for you guys

Fuck it put the cams in. Sure the engine was cheap but it also makes no power....... We can get 2.5 mzr s all day long for that price

Speed engines are $2500 here. The 2.5’s around 500-700 but then you need a good speed head if yours is messed up. They ain’t cheap here.

I’m probably gonna throw the cams in. I’m gonna pull the timing cover off anyways so it’s like 10 minutes more work after that
