may as well bring up another old thread. car has ~48k miles on it so maybe i don't need to change my coolant. though i thought i heard once that it's recommended to change every 100k OR 5 years, which is first. well...i'm at 7 years.

so i've read a bit about coolant. when i search on o'reilly's site, i see the pink Zerex that most talk about. but when i enter my car info, that site is saying i need to buy the blue version. wtf? a side by side comparison shows no diff other than the color. duh.

and i've seen many people say 'eh, just use XXX and you'll be fine'. well...that blue version isn't one i've seen anyone say that about. any thoughts?

If you want to use the same fluid that lasts 5 years and 100K miles, go to a mazda dealership and get the FL22, it will be like $30 per gallon.

read on the MSF...someone posted that the stock stuff is actually good for 10 year/100k. shit i dunno. i did read some about the mazda stuff (or can buy from ford and it's concentrated i think).

well duh. i downloaded the shop manual a long time ago (forgot about that!) and checked it. This is what it says for the FL22 fluid:

Replace at first 192,000 km (120,000 miles) or 10 years;
after that, every 96,000 km (60,000 miles) or 5 years

So...unless there is a mechanical issue (or code thrown) i guess i'm good for now.

I guess I'm ok at 10 years and 105k with never even opening the coolant reservoir

who in God's name bumped a Redline thread?

Uhhhhh...oops? So he is really banned? Couldn’t tell if that was a joke or not. What did that guy do? He certainly posted a lot and I haven’t run into any harsh posts of his (or hers, whichever).

According to Mazda parts counter (Dan at Ourisman Mazda in MD) any Speed3 produced *after* December 17, 2007 uses FL-22. Before that it *does *not use FL22. AllData contradicts this, and states I need FL-22.

AllData isnt incorrect but there is a caveat. As per the TSB 01-033/07, you CAN use FL-22 on older Speed3 but dont mix it with orange coolant because it will turn black.

Dan sent me this Mazda Fluids Chart updated March 16 2019 is as follows:

Pentonsin PENTOFROST A2 (GREEN) Antifreeze Specially Formulated For Asian Vehicles — CONCENTRATE- HOAT technology but does not have FL-22 according to the rep I spoke to at PENTOSIN but it does cross reference with Mazda 0000-77-501E-02.

http://www.pentosin.net/specsheets/Pentofrost_A2.pdf

Pentofrost A3 (BLUE) does have FL-22, according to the same guy at Pentosin but is only available in 50/50 mix but does NOT cross reference with Mazda 0000-77-501E-02 (confusing).

http://www.pentosin.net/specsheets/Pentofrost_A3.pdf

I had little trust in the expertise of the guy at Pentosin...he knew nothing about what FL-22 specs included, only that MAZDA had no cut off date for the need to use FL-22 or not. He was wrong about the cut off date.

Pentofrost A1 (RED) is FOR ASIAN vehicles, CONCENTRATED, HOAT technology but isnt listed for MAZDA.

An inexpensive FL-22 coolant CONCENTRATE is RAVENOL J4D2092 Coolant Antifreeze - HJC Hybrid Japanese Coolant Protect FL22 Concentrate (5 Liter. $27 on Amazon.

Sorry for the bump, just became familiar with all the drama, but this may be worthwhile -
Peak makes 3 coolants now ,for various Asian vehicles, the Green one is for Mazdas:

Direct link: https://peakauto.com/products/antifreeze-coolants/automotive/oet-asian-vehicles-extended-life-green/
Per their website, it contains high-quality organic acid technology (OAT) corrosion inhibitors and is free of borate, nitrite, silicate and amines chemicals.
Sounds like everything FL22 is supposed to be, for much cheaper.

I've been using the Global stuff below (also green) for a while on my rx-8 and the MS3, as it also seems to not have any silicates/phosphates and is good in a pinch when distilled water isn't available, and locally they sell it as Walgreens pharmacies, of all places:
