Custom Shift Cable

That's great to hear. How did everything go with putting the two nuts for the firewall plate back on? That was one of the hardest parts for me.

it wasn't bad getting the nuts back on it was trying to keep the insulation out of the hole was the hard part hahaha

@Trithemius Were you ever able to get your shifter stop to keep from stressing the cables installed? I'm curious as to how you accomplished that. I was thinking of using some cable clamps but im not really sure.

i just repalced my cracked clutch pedal and now my shifters feel sloppy...now i'll have to look into this...wonderful....

Well, it sucks to revive this thread, but I managed to snap the fore/aft cable again.

I guess I shifted too hard from 3rd to 4th, and it stayed in 4th. So I'll be ordering another cable and replacing it. It should be easier this time. And it's cheap, should be around $50 shipped.

It's kind of disappointing that these better constructed cables still snapped. I did get the 40 series high efficiency last time, so maybe I'll try the armor core this time, hoping that they're stronger.

And this is my daily, so no car for about a week.

Turns out that I spoke a little to soon.

Yes the cable is done for, no it did not snap.

The nut for the bulkhead backed off, and was probably flopping around and at an angle. So when I yanked on it, it pulled the housing loose from the bulkhead. The cable is still perfectly fine, there's just nothing to push against.

There's no putting it back together, because with all those bent support wires, it would tear itself up from the inside. And crimping that thick of a bulkhead would be darn near impossible.

TLDR: Cables are strong, installer error.

Did anyone find out if the 57.5" is the length needed for a gen 2 ms3?

I've yet to see anyone put up numbers or attempt this on an MS3. The distance from where the cables attach to the shifter cage to the end fitting with it in neutral would need to be measured as well as the overall length of the cables.

Its been a while since posting on this thread, but im in the process of making the shift cable bracket, but what does the 9x11mm mean on the second hole, where the other is only 9mm? @Trithemius

Oh okay, that makes more sense thanks! And also the horizontal position is the 2 3/8 for the holes if I'm correct?

The 2 3/8" is how high above the base plate the holes for the cable bulkheads are. Different holes than the ones that attach it to the transmission.

Sorry if I misunderstood your question.

I see. Midwest won't have the MTF-4S back in stock for a while now, so I think im going to have to get the MSF-4S instead, should still hopefully work. Any ways, the guys that are making that bracket are having issues figuring out how far in the holes are from the outside on the bracket are on the top view to hold the bracket to the tranny, thought I should ask @Trithemius because I only see the 1 5/8 space between the holes on the top?

If you draw a line from the 5/8 hole it should equally bisect the two mounting holes, it's not critical, just get it close. The overall dimensions of the plate will dictate how it fits, and those are on the diagram.

I'm an engineer and my father is a fabricator. We could make a few brackets if people want them. They would all be hand made. However, if enough people wanted one and could do a group buy, I have a friend with a waterjet that could cut the pieces and then I could weld them together.
I would definitely be interested. Lmk.

Got the install done.. Was a pain in the ass and took a lot of adjusting. But it works and HUGE CHANGE in the shifting performance wow.

Nice! The adjustment is kind of a pain, but totally worth it.

Did you by chance use loctite where the cable bulkheads attach to the bracket? One issue with the bracket design is that it's not clearanced very well to get a wrench in there to tighten the nuts on the bulkheads. I had an issue where one backed off, probably helped by heat and vibration, so the cable was flopping around, which destroyed it. With blue loctite I've had no issues, still on there tight as ever. You might want to check on it in a month or so and make sure they're still tight.

Ahh man!! I didn't use locktite... Looks like I'm just going to have toadd some later on..

I ordered them from http://www.midwestcontrol.com/, specifically their push pull cable configurator, http://www.midwestcontrol.com/linkage/. The order was their 40 series high efficiency cable, 57.5 inches, 3 inch throw bulkhead style assembly at both ends, with an MTF-4S fitting at each end (it's a ways down the page) x2, since the car has 2 cables

Did you have to custom order these. I dont see them specifically on that size configuration Only thing remotely close was 60 inches
