Duel port iwg actuator setup

Hi guys,

I have a 2007 mazdaspeed 6 from new,
Recently Built motor, gearbox with Gen1 & Gen2 mix, Efr7163 Twinscroll turbo, CS Throttle body, CS cams, custom Twinscroll manifold, Mac 3port solenoid with genv duel port iwg actuator using only one port, split second controller, Jmf intake manifold, Auxiliary fueling not tuned as yet, Guardian Angel, CS hpfp internals, CS Diff mount, Treadstone tr8 fmic, Devilsown Wmi, SupertechValves with +1mm exhaust valves, etc...tuning with Cobb Accessport ..

Been through my fair share of problems with the car but wouldn't have learnt much otherwise.

At 65 getting a little difficult to work on car like i used to, but it gets done ..

I had damaged my knees a while back and was unable to work on car , workshop had put a 19 psi spring in actuator which was causing a overboost condition higher in the rpm but spoolup and midrange was amazing after I had corrected valve Clearances (too small ) since then ive put in a 14psi spring and noticed ive lost some of the strong lower/midrange pull..

To try and rectify this , I want to setup my Mac 3 port solenoid to the Turbosmart genv duel port iwg actuator using both ports on actuator.

What i have so far is pressure source split = one side going to cap side of actuator other going to 1 in solenoid, 2 going to rod side of actuator, 3 vented .

1.) Is the above plumbing correct and what actuator spring should i use...

2.) Why is the plumbing different when the pressure source is not split which then goes into 1 on solenoid, 2 to actuator and 3 vented.

3)) how would the tune be done any differently.

Im hoping this way ,my tuner will be able to keep wastegate closed a bit longer lower down giving me back that very quick spoolup to midrange that was there with the 19psi spring without the overboost condition higher up in the rpm...

Please advise..

With a 14psi spring and basic 3-port boost control you should be able to target boost in the mid 20psi range, but in saying this, it should all be corrected by the tune and if you are changing springs without making modifications in the tune for it then you can't expect much gain from it.

Remember, assuming your car targets load, or even boost for that matter, since you have gone from a 19psi spring to a 14psi spring, to reach your desired boost levels you were at before, the car needs to increase its wastegate duty cycle, but it can only do so much as it will be limited by the tune.

As for your IWG actuator, you can apply pressure to keep it shut and apply pressure to open it. With this you can achieve higher boost levels with much lower spring pressures, but again this needs to be accounted for in the tune.

Here is a photo for reference, but keep in mind this is on an external wastegate setup, your internal wastegate will be the opposite as in an IWG will apply pressure on the bottom to keep it closed and pressure on the top to open, EWG does the opposite, pressure on the bottom to open and pressure on the top to close.

Do you have any data logs?

Busy doing logs and to be fair to my tuner, the tune is not complete.

It seems that pressure from manifold is overpowering the 14psi spring lowerdown and preload is not enough as it builds boost, reason for wanting to change setup if tuning doesn't give the results I had with the 19psi spring.

Thanks for the info , I will post logs on weekend.

At such boost level you shouldn't have any issues with backpressure forcing the wastegate open, especially during spool to mid range as you mention. I've had similar experience on another build but this was due to poor wastegate design.

As Easter Bunny asked, who is your tuner?

Someone from the mps (mazdaspeed) community here in South Africa that does the tuning.
Has a good reputation..

I get what you saying about that at lower boost not overpowering the wastegate , but that efr7163 Twinscroll builds spool really quick (on the 19psi spring)

Im going to give the tuning a chance to run its course and see what we end up with.

I just wanted to have some plan if it doesn't work out, the 19psi spring was too strong but done the job really well lower down..

My reasoning may be wrong but with the duel port setup, that wastegate can be kept closed where its needed.

I don't know if theres anyone out there with a similar setup with the efr7163 Twinscroll....

What is your tuners opinion on it, he should be able to answer it. If you are saying the turbo spools slower with a 14psi spring, that is to be expected but that is also able to be corrected in the tune. If your tune isn't finished then you should wait for the final revision before determining that it spools slower than the 19psi spring.
