I finally disassembled the engine which broke and I got some photos. Not sure if anyone is interested to see but I thought I’d share 
Here’s from the outside. It seems more significant in person. There’s a small hole on the opposite side.

Here’s the oil pan.

And here’s the inside of the block. You can see the broken rod attached to the piston. I presume the bottom piece of that rod was banging about and caused the damaged before it bent and wedged against the crank.

Good news is that I think the crankshaft is ok so I can reuse it.
