Issue with what appears to be phantom KR

A friend and I recently purchased a couple of remanned engines from Gearhead a.k.a the company Edge gets their engines from. We have this strange issue where from about 5400-6k it will absolutely peg the knock sensor no matter what it's set at, even with E85 it still does it. Does anyone have any idea as to what would cause this besides mechanical noise because I'm inclined to believe we wouldn't have the same mechanical noise on two separately assembled engines. Does the knock sensor need to be set to the specific engine, or is there something else it could be. My injectors were swapped with confirmed clean and free flowing injectors too. Thanks guys.

Is the knock sensor torqued to spec? I assume you assembled them together?

something simple like a tmic shroud not seating be properly can cause enough bang to set off the knock, have your checked for loose connections on hoses/ wires?

Yes he's actually had his engine about 8 months longer than me and he's done all of these things several times. I don't currently have my car in my possession, but when I do I'll check all of this as well.

Do you see the same KR at those RPMs if you putt putt up to them?

This will depend if he has his Knock sensor set at the most sensitive load settings.

Personally it sounds like its some noise in the motor. I'd mask it in those RPM's (make the knock sensor less sensitive) and continue tuning if it were me. I know Sari (Ge3kSpeed) had the same issue on his remaned block. It's noise somewhere....

Edit:

Also it is good to note, if you aren't HEARING pings or knocks it probably isn't real. If there are no stutters, etc.

I'm getting knock of 8.05 myself. Pretty much injector seals time for me. Post logs tho.

I get constant kr all the time when I drive. 8.05 often on the highway. It means nothing, never been an issue. If I accelerate or decelerate goes away instantly.

lol I know Sari does Geoff I'm Jeromy from the group chat. Yeah Justin has my logs I'll have to get them from him to upload them. Sari was the person I was talking about in the OP. Justin's actually cleaning up the area where the KS mates to see if maybe something there was causing it, but if not I'll just have the sensitivity for 5000-5500 lowered. Injector seals are brand new and when the injectors got swapped the cruising KR all but went away. About to do a leakdown/compression check as well to make sure everything is indeed okay.

Rather strange update. Friend of mine pulled the KS, cleaned off the area underneath where they had painted and so far (and hopefully permanently) the KR has gone away. We're going to keep an eye on it, but if it stays this way I'll need to reach out to Gearhead/ATK/Edge to let them know about this.

That'd certainly make sense! It needs to be directly on the metal

I might let Kool Katz know about this. My block is painted black.

Justin be like "Yeah I know, we're the ones that figured it out."

Well disappointing news lol. It's back. Cruising KR only happens between .47-.52 load. Such a small margin. I haven't gone WOT yet. I'm going to finish the break in period then we'll start doing real work on it.

Cruising KR gonna KR.

Cruising KR gonna KR.

True, but that crap is hella annoying. Gearhead was about as clueless as we thought they were going to be, so we're starting to run out of ideas that it could be lol.

I'm going to struggle with the break in. I don't commute more than 10 miles a day so I'll have to plan some long trips. If I was still working in Fort Worth I would have 1000 miles in 2 weeks.

Justin brought it back to me with 650 and I've got 350 in 2 days lol. Going to take it to 1500 and get everything moving forward power wise hopefully.

Hey guys, new to this forum, but came across this thread because I’m having the exact same issue. Started off with KR around 5500rpm on a reman long block. Found out at the tuner, and have been chasing the gremlin for months. Did you guys get any resolution on it?
[doublepost=1509045187][/doublepost]Here’s some stuff to go with. Screenshot of the data log, KR is second from the right.

Mine ended up being just aftermarket motor mounts. All else looked good after injector seal swap too.

Thanks for the reply!

I just put in the replacement seals that came with the motor, wish I had known about all the issues with the seals and I would have got new ones when I had everything taken apart.
And my mounts are still stock as well. And looked in ok shape when we put them back in.
