New Engine VS Rebuild-looking for advice

Hey there folks. I am looking for some advice. Due to my sonata recently getting T-Boned in my driveway, I need a car and still happen to have a speed 6 with a hydro locked engine. At this point, I do not know the condition or whether the engine is salvageable or not. But let's say the engine is, would it be better to rebuild the engine or go via street unit and buy a crate motor? I know this is rather broad but I'm wonder if I wouldn't be better off taking out a loan and throwing all under the hood vs buying a new car. Thanks for looking.

Do not buy from street unit, they have a LOOOOOONG history of bad products and/or bad customer service. Search around and you will find all the info you need on their bad business practice.

There was a company working through Edge Auto but there have been issues with their engines and warranties.

Corksport has a crate engine program with a reasonable warranty. They are built to take a fair beating as well.

If it's only going to be a DD, buy a refurbished one or find one from a reputable people. There's a lot of Speeds getting totaled lately.

If you have other means of transportation and can afford to not have a car for a while and want something that can handle a lot, then go built. I think Speedsolutions can offer you a mild build for about $4.5 - $5k.

If you want a built engine now, then go Corksport.

After doing the forged build route on my Speed 3 with what some would say has been good results for a DD I have this perspective on it: If you have the means (time, really) to do the install yourself it`s worth it. Most shops are charging WAY too much for engine pull/install labor. With a lift and a shop full of tools you could do an engine swap in one day`s worth of time. Shops are billing it at 30 hours.

Build it for what your expectations will be and let it rip, enjoy the car for a long time. If you don`t have the means to cut down on the labor it quickly turns it into a project of love and the cost will outweigh what the car is worth.

Agree. Tis the reason why I did it myself minus the machining.

If you are pressed for time then I say go with a built engine from one of the shops. They take car of everything and have a warranty. I did a rebuild and I spent a lot of time ordering parts and waiting. Also ordering the wrong parts so it took longer than expected. Plus being a beginner at it added to the time. I priced out Speed Perf6rmanc3 and it was about $5k.

If I were doing it again, I would get a long block from Edge and not look back.

Being in Canada, I opted to get a new short block shipped up since my OE had low comp. I went this way for a few reasons. No one up here other than a few shops really know just what the fuck is going on. I had about 6-8 refurb'd engine emails ghosted because I asked simple questions like 'this is an mzr block right', 'which machine shop did the work', 'is there any numbers, blue prints, spec sheet?'. Nada.

Friendly heads up, AFAIK I bought the 4th last short block from Mazda USA and that was pre covid shutdown. They also have free shipping and that seems to include cross border shipping. All bonuses for me. That was the other reason why I didnt send my motor out - dont trust Canadian shops or dont know which machine shop to use and didnt want to deal with brokerage fee's and firm's or the crating it up and back n forth.

My MLC or mid life crisis keeps getting delayed so with the original short block motor being swapped out right now, if I want to live the dream in the future, I'll send that to Sp33d P3formance to be reworked and perhaps pick up a rebuild only ms6 and then I'll have 2 heads and 3 blocks. Or just remachine the head again to fit built block. These can be your dreams too!
