Post S3 install thread because KiwiFail

Alright, it’s been a long time since I updated this thread.

Long story short last december I did a compression test because I thought I was losing coolant. Numbers were 180-150-165-150. My heart dropped to my stomach and I decided that I was going to part out but Justin and everyone else convinced me that I should keep the car and rebuild.

I snatched these RPF1’s for a $550 a few weeks before I did compression test

Anyway, I bought a DD since I know my car would be down for a while.

Fast forward a couple of months (It took me a while to get my motivation back to work on this), tear down begins. It feels like deja vu all over again.

I also found out that the turbo housing bolts backed out and it caused the turbine wheel to hit the housing and chipped the wheel.

At this point I took everything out of my motor and I was just ready to give up because that’s an extra expense to get the turbo to be rebuilt, possibility of getting new pistons and other stuff. But again, everyone in the Pizzacat group consoled and convinced me to soldier on.

In March, I linked up with @KingScumbag and brought my motor to him to see if everything is salvageable.

We build motors outside in Boston

The reading of the cylinders were funky for some reason but everything else is still in specs.
Then we went to eat Pho with Ben aka Block8head.

To be continued....

Glad everything was within spec and salvageable on that end, bummer about the turbo.

What are your plans for the turbo?

I kept the turbo and sent it out for a rebuilt. More on that later hahahah!

Keep in mind what Im posting happened between December to last weekend.

Hello again, it’s me with another update.

@KingScumbag; decided to bring my block to his machinist and they found out that my block was trash!! It seemed that the machine shop I brought my block to did not even check if the block was usable before doing work to it. Had he done that, he’d have found out that the ALL the cylinders were bad and I wouldn’t have to deal with this. But, lesson learned, an expensive one.

So for the next couple of days I went to source another block and found one locally. $500 later:

I was also able to sell the head to someone on FB later that day so that offset the cost of the block lol.

How the car sat

So at this point, I went ahead and ordered everything needed to get this build going again. Piston rings, rod bolts, head studs bolts and washers etc etc.

A few days went by and @KingScumbag; reached out to me to ask if he could buy my intake because he was trying to get some runs in and break some record. Since I needed a custom intake to accomodate for the fuel cell placement im planning to install, I agreed that he could have my intake for a few bucks and dinner. The next weekend, I took out my intake and we met up in Boston:

We linked up again a few days later at Freektune’s shop to drop off my block so @KingScumbag; can bring it to his machinist.

He got his car on the dyno and the got some awesome power number out of his car:

Went out to get some pulls in his car and we were smiling ears to ears. I legit got scared a few times lol

Good morning fellow speeders,

A couple of days went by and I started asking around for quotes to rebuild my turbo. I decided to send out my turbo to AGP turbo (agpturbo.com) because they had the best price and seemed to be very knowledgeable on Borg Warner turbos.

Since I will be needing a new intake, I sent out a DM to Ramfab (great and awesome guy) to inquire about getting one made. He told me that he can definitely make/modify one of the intakes he had made to my specification.

Meanwhile, @KingScumbag; is prepping my block for his machinist. We found out that our blocks are a good hot dog holder.

My build has taken over his instagram feeds.

Fast forward a few days later, AGP Turbo called me to notify that the turbo has been received and went through inspections. Dude was like “Did a Volkswagen go through your turbo or something? The wheels all chewed up!” Lol. So anyway he gave me a price and it was $200 more than what I was quoted. I brought up the price I was quoted and provided him with proof of an estimate.

Later that night, they emailed me an invoice with the original quote. I was stoked they were able to honor the initial quote. I paid the invoice and not even 12 hours later, turbo was shipped!

Here it is in all of its glory:

My new clutch was delivered about a week later:

Things got slow and we didn’t really do anything else. It was a waiting game.

A couple of weeks went by and I was contacted by Pat’s cousin that they are planning to do a surprise bachelor party for him. He asked if I would be down with going to the Bruins game in a couple of days with 14 other people and right then right there I said “I’m down!

So off to the bruins game:

Pat didn’t know that we bought him a ticket and are actually going to the game. Time to reveal it to him:

Since we have plenty of time to get other stuff done, I went ahead and dropped off my exhaust mani for ceramic coating and valve cover and timing cover for powder coat.

Ordered some cometic MLX gasket from Oddball industries (Shout out!)

I was having boost withdrawal so I played with my turbo and intake in my room like a gentleman:

A couple of days later I picked up my EM:

Now, this is where the fun begins. @KingScumbag; had previously built an engine for a local dude with an agreement they split the cost with contingency that he will get the car on a dyno and advertise the build (as far as I know this was their agreement. Pat can chime in lol). Anyway, after 2 years of just sitting around, dude is finally parting out and Pat got dibs on the motor. He let me know the price and it was the deal of the century that I had to jump on it.

The next day, I brought cash and picked up the motor:

His worry was possible surface rust forming on the internals. But this thing was still clean and mint

Loaded this thing up in my uncle’s Tracker and this is how we unload it at his garage lol:

Is that an ACT Clutch I see? Lol Man I wish I had the money to do my clutch while the motor was out..... :(

Yes sir! I ACT 6 puck clutch with prolite flywheel. I was worried about driveability but this thing is not even bad at all.

Anyway, might as well do updates lol

@KingScumbag; and I met up again during his test and tune session at the drag strip and he agreed to come over on the weekend so we can get the motor in the car.

It took my powder coater guy a while but he came through with my stuff! This is what shocker yellow with alien silver looks like!

Got my cam lobe housing coated too

I did not take pics of this part but I figured while the HPFP housing is out might as well replace all the o-rings with Michael Rey’s kit. @JohnnyTightlips; did a how-to on it and it definitely helped me a lot. Thank you bb you da best.

Anyway, comes the weekend and here is @KingScumbag; looking like a bigfoot sighting.

It took us approximately 10 hours from motor being in the stand, took it apart to replace head gasket, swapping head bolt to freektune headstuds, timing and putting everything back together, to getting the car to run again! I cannot thank Pat enough for everything he did for me!

It was a good but tiring day.

Also he might kill me for saying this but, if you ever need a mobile engine building contact Shedbuilt motorsports. He’ll get you straighten out lmao!

Good to know someone else’s report about using the 6 puck with a prolite flywheel. I was trying to decide between the two for when I get the ACT kit.
