Raw fuel smell under load

Recently finished a rebuild and now I am trying to hunt down a raw fuel smell when I am accelerating.

I had a friend sit in the car and rev the engine for a few minutes while we were at my house and couldn't see any leaks under the hood, nor could I smell any fuel whatsoever.

Then we took it for a quick 7-10 min test drive and on acceleration of any kind there is a definite raw fuel smell that we both smelled, and it seems to worsen the more aggressive on the pedal I get.

Any suggestions on how I might go about tracking it down? I feel like it only happens under load, AKA when the turbo gets involved....so I am not sure how to go about this!
 
Is there a dyno near you that you could put it on a load and observe at the same time? If not maybe do a pull and as soon as you smell fuel pull over real quick and inspect before it has time to evaporate.

did you happen to go PI and run a return system that might be leaking?
 
Check the hardline from the hpfp to the fuel rail. Those are known to crack or get pinhole leaks In them. Especially if you dont secure it to the side of the head with the 2 bolts

sorry to leave you guys hanging for a bit, i didn't get any notifications that there were responses here.

My buddy is in town right now so while were in the car I pulled over, popped the back seat off, and had him smell/look at the fuel pump while driving (under load) and the smell is 100% originating from that spot. I pulled it out during the rebuild and now I'm wondering if there is an o-ring that I may have knicked when re-installing the fuel pump lid or something because it is DEFINITELY coming from that area. My buddy didn't see any visual leaks and we didn't have any fuel sloshing out of that area when I braked aggressively or quickly turned the car left and right.

Also the car isn't stuttering or hesitating so I still think all the fuel is getting to where it needs to be, I just think I am getting some fumes from that area.

Actually another question, did you throw any codes when you were having the problem? I noticed a few p04xx codes around the time I started noticing the smell. Right now I am getting P0441 and P0401, wondering whether or not they are related!
 
I did throw a code for gross evap leak. Dont remember the specific p0xxx number

P0401 is egr tho IIRC
 
Nice. I'm hoping the new cap will take care of that gross evap leak code.

And I just pulled the EGR off, I *thought* I cleaned it out during the rebuild but apparently not. It was disgusting so I cleaned it out but I just decided to go with the full EGR delete anyways. I'm in Arizona so I should still be able to pass emissions with the delete. I might throw it back on for the time being but who knows.
 
I had a cracked ring in my 6, I had gross and small evap leak codes at random for months before I replaced it. Also, if you don't tighten it down enough it might pop up from time to time.
