I get asked this question probably 10x a day. So here it is folks:
The perfect fit, imo, for meat purposes with no major modifications is: 17x9 +45 with 255 40 tires.
Some tires are wider than others, so read the tire specs and make sure it's a good match for a 9" wheel.
You do need to roll your fenders, specifically the rears. There is a small tap on the front fenders of the ge2, not sure how it is on the gen1, that needs to be flattened as well.
Spacer wise, you do need to have at least 8mm spacers on the front wheels. It's best to get yourself some extended studs and just run a 10mm spacer as they're easier to find. I'm running 5mm, and scrubbing the inside wall of the tire on the strut... just a bit
You obviously can not slam the car on this setup, it's a very tight fitment that functions very well and looks good.
