I get asked this question probably 10x a day. So here it is folks:
The perfect fit, imo, for meat purposes with no major modifications is: 17x9 +45 with 255 40 tires.
Some tires are wider than others, so read the tire specs and make sure it's a good match for a 9" wheel.
You do need to roll your fenders, specifically the rears. There is a small tap on the front fenders of the ge2, not sure how it is on the gen1, that needs to be flattened as well.
Spacer wise, you do need to have at least 8mm spacers on the front wheels. It's best to get yourself some extended studs and just run a 10mm spacer as they're easier to find. I'm running 5mm, and scrubbing the inside wall of the tire on the strut... just a bit :)
You obviously can not slam the car on this setup, it's a very tight fitment that functions very well and looks good.
Cheers

Based on what im seeing here, A 18X8.5 +40 Should fit no problem on a 1st gen.

Yeah they will fit!

Make sure you like the way the 18x8.5 look; because the look nothing like you have seen in this thread. The face is rounded instead of flat like you see in every picture above.

Well damn it. I just wanted easy fit.
We need to build a listing of known fits with what it takes to fit with pics.

Looks like you have the extra gap between the fender and the front door. Are your fenders protruding/throwing off the evenness of the car's side? That happened to my Speed from improper jacking. I'm looking into seeing if a body shop can easily pull things back into place from underneath.

Yessir- Doesn't take much. A couple of times of improper jacking, and you have a wide body like look LOL. I actually don't mind the look at all, and I'm honestly not going to spend any money or time to try to fix it.

Love the RPF1's guys. I have a set on my um... cough cough vw cough cough. Most hate it but I love them. Brings out he Asian in me and reminds me I need another speed.
