Sho's 7th Mazda- 2025 CX 70

So...I hadn't driven my genpu ms3 since last June (2024). Just sat in the driveway wasting space. No working AC, 230k miles, you do the math lol.

Anyways, been researching new rides for myself pretty much during any free time I've had since January.

Then Michelle tells me she doesnt want her Grand Highlander anymore cause we never use the 3rd row and she hates the payment on it. Keep in mind she got that thing April 2024, and it already had 34k miles as of Monday.

So what do we do? We talk about what I've been looking at thats large enough for road trips with the dogs and has enough room if we have a kid in a few years.

Headed to the Mazda dealership on Memorial day and test drove a cx70 turbo preferred (base model) that checks all our boxes... heated seats, moonroof, parking sensors, big trunk.

Loved the way it drove. Whatever software updates they've done to the transmission tuning since the launch of the cx90 has improved things quite a bit. It does short shift gears 1 and 2 and youre in 3rd by 18mph if you take off normally from a stop. But nothing crazy.

The 48v mild hybrid battery issues also seem to be resolved with software and post 7/24/24 build. So, not as concerned as I would be a year ago.

Anyways, sat down with our Salesman and discussed a few things. One being to see what they'd give Michelle on trade-in on her Toyota. Even with the 34k miles on it in a year, she still had equity in it.

Next step was negotiation. Having done my research, pretty much any dealership worth a damn is negotiable. So I started right off the bat asking for 11% off msrp. Salesman was shocked and was like "we dont have margin on these".

"Alright, I'll go back to Ohio and make a deal with my local dealership then".

He quickly went back to talk to the sales manager and came back with 4% off msrp and an extra 1k added to the trade. Still wasn't where I wanted. Couple more go rounds back and forth and we settled on 11% discount off msrp, an additional 2k on the trade-in on top of their initial offer + waiving their stupid dealer add-on for the pulsing brake light and window etching and ended up with a super affordable pmt (about 300 less than what we were paying on her Toyota each month)

Ill probably grab a JB4 at some point to get the Turbo S power figures without having to spend the extra $5-10k on the car for a higher trim lol.

Aside from that- will probably tint the front windows, and do some little visual things here and there. Will update the thread as time goes by!

BTW this is my first ever new car.

And for Michelle, she's looking at cx5's, cx50, gr corolla as replacements for her lol.

Need to tune out that dip around 5k rpm
For sure. What's weird is that dip is only on the burger Motorsports dynos. I found another chart from AFE and it doesnt dip like that right before 5k.

Regardless, torque pro works with the car. So I'll grab some data soon and see what's what!

Excited to see where this thing goes! Hoping Versatuner or some sort of tuning other than those MAF clamps for the future.

I've forgotten how dumb non car enthusiasts are.

On one of the fb groups "why does the transmission downshift while slowing down to a stop like youre driving a manual transmission? "

If it's like our cx-5 it can downshift pretty aggressively for an automatic if you are braking hard

Not as aggressive on the downshifts as my dads 2016 cx5, but then again this thing has 2 more gears and loves to live below 2000rpm. I barely notice the downshifts unless im looking at the tach. And when i-stop is engaged, itll actually downshift thru the gears as you slow down with the engine sitting at 0 rpm which is neat.

Don't mind my big doofus of a dog panting in the background of the i-stop video lol

Just under 900 miles so far. Avg Mpg readout on the dash is 28.9mpg (I reset it leaving the dealership). Keep in mind, this is probably 70-80% highway miles and typically at 75-80mph. I'm sure the estimate is optimistic by 2-3 mpg as all of my previous mazdas have always shown 2-3mpg higher than the actual hand calculation of miles driven ÷ gallons filled.

I did get a couple phantom blind spot notifications on the passenger side today during sunset time,Which was interesting but only would last 2-3 seconds at a time and then go back to normal operation.

I havent made up my mind if I prefer driving with i-stop on or off. It doesnt seem to bother me much, but as a car guy...I worry about long term effects of the engine firing up and shutting down like it does. Although I will say its pretty cool how Mazda chose to fire the engine back up via combustion and not starter or the hybrid system.

The headlights are fantastic. The newest vehicle ive personally owned prior to this was the 2013 MS3. While it had the HID's with AFS, the output was garbage compared to these new LED setups. I can actually see well at night now!

The main cup holders in the front dash area are tiny. My better half can't fit her ridiculous Stanley cups in them, and while that doesnt bother me...she does not like it nor the small center console. The small center console also doesnt bother me as I dont really keep stuff in my car aside from necessities and when it comes to drinks...its either coffee or bottled water for me; which fit fine.

The driving dynamics for a nearly 5000lb, 200" long vehicle are fantastic. It doesnt feel as big as it is on the road, and handles sweeping highway on ramps at speed as well as twisty back roads no issue for its size as long as you're aware you can't drive it like a miata. You get enough feedback through the chassis, and the steering is on the nose.

Minor annoyances:
Thursday, I had a road trip for work. Figuring out the total mileage round trip, I knew if I went right to the gas station and headed out on a full tank, I wouldnt have to stop for gas the rest of the day. So here's where it gets weird. I had 1 tick over 3/4 tank on the fuel gauge when I pulled in. Figured a quick few quick gallons to full and I'd be on my way. Wrong. Pump would shut off immediately when trying to gas up. Maybe its the pump? Moved to another one, same deal. Ok...weird on a brand new car. So just in case, I drove down the road a bit aggressively to burn off some fuel, got it to 3/4 tank on the nose on the gauge, went back to the original pump and it filled up fine. Tried again this afternoon at a different gas station. It will not take any fuel from a pump if theres over 3/4 tank full. Not a huge deal, but annoying.

Mazdas seat belt alarms....
My fiance and I always wear our seatbelts. No biggie. But we have 3 dogs that love to go on car rides, and prefer to be in the back seat versus the cargo area. Fine and dandy, we have a flat bottom hammock for the back seat. However, with them back there...you have to buckle all 3 belts unless you want to hear the damn seat belt chime go off 80 times before it shuts up. Our previous toyota, we could turn the seat belt alarms off with the Carista obd2 dongle and their app. No such luck with this car. What I'll probably do is buy 3 seatbelt extenders for the back seats so we dont have to remember to buckle all 3 seats any time the dogs are with us.

The heated seats...holy smokes do they get hot on the highest level. Lol.

Anywho, I'll probably do an oil change on my own using a mazda genuine filter and whatever quality 0w20 find soon just to see if there are any break in materials/metal floating around in the pan/filter. And I'll be doing 5k oil change intervals beyond that first change. Ill let the dealership handle the first 3, 5k changes since those are "free".

Things to do eventually:
-order the Turbo S inner tail lamp housings that are on the liftgate so I have fully illuminated rear lights and not just the corners. Kind of dumb to me Mazda only does the fully illuminated tails on the Turbo S models in the US.
-Order all weather floor mats
-order window visors/rain guards
-tint the front windows
-black out all the chrome rear badges
-get a tinted overlay for the big front Mazda logo

Oh...
I forgot this car was equipped with the digital rearview mirror until I saw the little switch on the bottom of the mirror that you'd usually flip at night to avoid glare if you dont have auto dimming. Forgetting that, I flipped the little lever the other day and to my surprise...boom camera rear view. It took a few minutes for my eyes to adjust to it but it works real well in daylight. I'll probably only use the DRVM when we have the vehicle loaded up with the dogs and luggage for road trips as itll be nice to be able to load up the cargo area and not have to worry about blocking the rear window and not being able to see out the back. And also, the camera has a nice wide angle that helps see vehicles in your blind spot as they start to pass you or you pass them.
More to come!

First oil change today at 2650 miles. Would've liked to do it at 1k but didn't have the time.
Mazda oil filter and mobil1 dexos 0w20. Dealer will change the oil in another 5k for my free change, then I'll switch to a good rated DI Turbo friendly oil and do the rest myself

That color is so dope. I believe that the 70 is one of the better cars that Mazda has produced out of the new gen fleet. It's weird to say because in a sense its a stubby CX90 but without all the recalls and repairs lol. As a dealer tech who's constantly servicing Mazdas, (hope im not jinxing it) I barely see the 70s coming in for anything crazy or laborious. Im glad that it seems your enjoying the drivability and overall product. I was able to get a 70 inline6 loaner for my trips to NJ for training and also enjoyed it. 70>90 haha. Here are two seperate 90s I've dealt with , one PHEV and one I6. 20240823_103851.jpg 20240823_103828.jpg IMG_20241125_193852_098.jpg IMG_20241125_193852_081.jpg 20240823_103851.jpg 20240823_103828.jpg IMG_20241125_193852_098.jpg IMG_20241125_193852_081.jpg

Yeah the seat warmers are no joke! And yeah, the seat belt alerts are so annoying. My Buzz is like that too. Apparently it's a thing for new cars.

Oh yeah, im sure the belt reminders are a federal requirement. Just sucks they can't be easily programmed off like the toyota. Oh well, super minor in the grand scheme of things!

Curious what you had the engine out for on the I6? Evvt actuator or something else?

It was one of the instances where an error likely occurred in the assembly line or manufacturing defect from the spark plug manufacturer but a spark plug had broken in a cylinder and wrecked the walls. The ground strap had broken off. When I took a look at the piston, it didn't seem like any contact was made with valves nor was the plug was loose. I will say though. INLINE6>PHEV having driven both to NJ with similar driving habits and even getting stuck in longer traffic in the I6, my wallet told me the I6 seems to be a bit better at MPG.
