Tell me the difference here

Went to Walmart for coolant. Looked for Zerex in red bottle. They don’t have it stocked. Checked their site and there is a red bottle but looks diff and says Valvoline on the front.

Then I get there and no dice. But there is a blue bottle that says Mazda approved. So WTF?!

Blue. Red. Green. Yellow. Dude.

So I bought the blue shit and moved on. But speaking with JohnnyTightlips we couldn’t tell the difference even on Valvoline’s site.

Any ideas? Just marketing bullshit?

I can't even find a datasheet on their site for the red. Maybe it's just different coloring. As long as it's FL22 coolant, you're good.

I don’t see anything that says it’s FL22. I didn’t think that was a requirement as much as it allows a longer time between changing.

Based on what’s been happening while trying my egr delete I’m about to just say fuck it and do a flush.

Sad cuz FL22 is good for 120K or 10 years.

This is the stuff I just put into my car. They don't make the other bottle anymore and instead changed to the one you have pictured. As long as you flush your cooling system of any other coolant you used before, this will work great.

Good to see I wasn’t the only one that couldn’t find the ‘usual’ stuff. I was using the blue to top off but like I said...might be a lost cause.

At least this stuff is cheap.

Has anyone found a non mixed version? I think I can go 65/35 since I won’t drive it in the winter.

I flushed mine with Motorcraft coolant. Found it unmixed on amazon for fairly cheap. Mixed it myself with distilled water, done.

Just flush your system with water really well, because there will be residual fluid in the system. I ran pure distilled water through it twice before I threw coolant back in.

Did you do the whole process of running it to temp before flushing again? Or did you just run distilled water thru reservoir until it came they the drain as clear?

I ran this in my juan. From what I found when I looked into it, Valvoline owns Zerex. So I assume this is pretty much the same shit just at a lower price because it's marketed under the ''less glamorous" brand name.

Thanks all. I feel better about having bought this.

Slight thread jack of my own thread.

Talked to Damond and my coolant is spilling out all over whilst doing egr delete due to front end being up on ramps. I e already mixed some blue with current green stock stuff. If I can remedy the spilling and top off once again am I screwing myself since I already mixed old and new? Required to flush now?

I did a basic drain and fill, not full flush, and ended up with some of the basic green coolant mixed with this. Turned it an ugly color in the reservoir but I never saw any issues from it. Probably not ideal, but lol.

Filled it with distilled, and then ran it. That way all the old fluid gets mixed with the fresh water. Did it twice over before filling it with coolant mix.

For the small amount that you lose with the EGR delete, I would've just topped it off with pure distilled water.

Mixing of coolants is tricky to answer, some mix fine, others do not. If it were me I would flush it when possible. But I'm a picky asshole when it comes to cars.

Color sadly doesn't mean anything. One time I used whatever was same color in my old miata and soon after it started to create this shitty brown solid stuff.

FL-22 is a P-OAT (phosphate, organic acid technology). Almost all "asian" vehicles use this. What you posted in the OP should be fine. I use a bottle of pink Zerex "asian" vehicle coolant to top off our newer Hyundai with no issues or ill effects.

This coolant shit is overly complicated, but I think this day and age you can probably run a 'universal' one and be OK...but a little research should save you any potential hassle. For example my Focus ST calls for some Ford specific orange coolant....turns out Dex-cool meets the same spec, so it's the same shit, you just have to dig to figure it out.

I don't know how current this is, but this chart is handy: https://images.oreillyauto.com/uploads/pdf/ad/SD_672 AFZ Comparison Chart-1.pdf

Well so since my car was on ramps it wasn’t a little bit lost. I attempted to catch it but was only partially successful. After I put the intake back together I’ll just flush it. May as well do all the fucking things, right?
